Israel evicts two Palestinian families from their homes

Monday, August 3, 2009

Two Palestinian families who have been living in East Jerusalem since 1956, were evicted from their homes on Sunday after an Israeli court rejected their appeal filed against the eviction. The eviction comes after increasing international pressure on Israel to stop settlement activity and end home evictions.

Israeli security forces entered the homes at 6:00 a.m. (local time) and forcibly removed the family and international activists who were also living in the homes. At least 19 children were among those removed. Al Jazeera reports that a family was beaten with batons as they tried to get back into their house. JTA reports that Jewish families moved into the homes shortly after the Palestinian families were evicted.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has laid biblical claim to the areas of East Jerusalem and has stated that Jews have the right to live anywhere in the city. Although Jerusalem is internationally recognized as occupied territory, Israel continues to evict Palestinians and instead build Jewish only apartments in the area, an action which is considered to be illegal under the Fourth Geneva Convention. Israel has plans for 350 new apartment buildings in East Jerusalem. U.N special coordinator for Middle East Peace, Robert Serry, condemned the evictions as “totally unacceptable”.

The international community, including the United States, has called on Israel to stop settlement activity and allow for the creation of a Palestinian state.

Tropical Storm Danny to threaten the U.S. East Coast this weekend

Wednesday, August 26, 2009

The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) has declared an area of disturbed weather north of Puerto Rico Tropical Storm Danny today, skipping the tropical depression stage.

A statement by the NHC said “a general northwestward motion with a decrease in forward speed is expected today and Thursday, with a turn toward the north-northwest expected on Friday.” This path should bring Danny near the North Carolina early this weekend, and possibly threatening the New England region by Sunday. While the storm is currently weak and disorganized, forecasters say the storm could reach Category 1 intensity on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. However, it is not expected to be as strong as the previous storm, Hurricane Bill.

At this point we are monitoring the storm

The center’s most recent forecast discussion on the tropical storm said “The forecast track is roughly parallel to the U.S. East Coast…and any deviation from the track could make a large difference in what areas get impacted by Danny”.

Some residents in the northeast U.S. are already monitoring Danny. Long Island, recovering from coastal flooding just last week as Hurricane Bill passed offshore, might suffer another hit.

Danny is currently situated about 445 mi (715 km) east of Nassau, Bahamas, and has winds of 45 mph (75 km/h). It is moving west-northwest at 16 kt. All interests along the East Coast are urged to keep an eye on the developing storm over coming days.

What You Need to Do

Financing is the first task if you do not have the cash to make an instant purchase you can approach banks or other mortgage providers to seek financing. Determine how much money is available to you for a loan and set your budget along these lines. You need to assess your costs which may include the contract price, the home inspection fee, the title search, the value appraisal and the closing costs.

The Options

There are different means of buying foreclosure for sale. There are auctions that take place right after foreclosure. You may also explore the possibility of short sales or pre-foreclosure sales. Then there are the real estate owned homes that typically come with title insurance. You need to study each type of sale and decide which one will work for you. Buyers should also conduct a comparative analysis of home prices in the neighborhood to be able to come up with a good offer that is based on careful research. Finally, buyers should also check out government assistance programs, grants and incentives available to first-time home buyers.

Algiers protest takes place despite ban

Sunday, February 13, 2011

A planned pro-democracy protest took place Saturday in Algiers, the capital of Algeria, despite a standing government ban on protests in the capital. Massive police presence reduced the event from its planned scope, and dispersed it after a few hours, but did not prevent it.

The demonstration, planned for some time, was to be a march through Algiers, from May First Square, about five kilometers (three miles) to Martyrs Square. Instead, protesters demonstrated in May First Square for a few hours.

Algeria has been officially in a state of emergency for nineteen years. Early this month, following recent pro-democracy events in Tunisia and Egypt, Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika said the state of emergency will be lifted “soon”. At the same time he also said marches would be allowed everywhere in the country except in Algiers. Leading up to this protest, riot police closed all entrances both to Algiers and to May First Square.

The number of demonstrators who gathered in May First Square despite the police cordons was estimated by officials at 1500, and by demonstration organizers at around 10,000. The number of riot police in the city — with body armor, armored vehicles, and water cannons — was anticipated by officials as high as 30,000, and estimated by organizers as high as 26,000.

The protest was organized by the National Co-ordination for Change and Democracy (CNCD), an umbrella group of Algerian organizations formed in late January. Protesters demanded democratic freedoms, an end to government corruption, and relief from economic hardships. Some protesters called for removal of President Bouteflika, although that was not a stated goal of the organizers.

Several hundred protesters were arrested, at least briefly. Algerian activist Elias Felali, who blogged from within the demonstration, claimed the police wanted to provoke violence, but the protesters were pointedly non-violent.

Contract to buy properties on site of Buffalo, N.Y. hotel proposal extended

Monday, October 2, 2006

Buffalo, New York —Sam Savarino, CEO of Savarino Companies, the development company to be in charge of building the Elmwood Village Hotel at Forest and Elmwood Avenues in Buffalo, New York has told Wikinews in an exclusive interview that the contract to buy the properties from 1109-1121 on Elmwood Avenue in Buffalo has been “extended,” but would not elaborate on how long the extension would last.

“We have extended our agreement to purchase the property and will have it under contract for what we hope is a sufficient period of time,” said Savarino.

The hotel would require the demolition of the five properties on Forest and would cause several businesses to relocate or close their doors. The hotel will be 72 rooms and will cost at least 7 to 10 million dollars to build. Wyndham Hotels is expected to be the owner/operator of the hotel. The properites are still owned by Hans Mobius. Two other properties, 605 and 607 Forest might also be part of the proposal, but lawsuits have so far stopped any development from taking place.

Savarino also stated in a recent interview with Wikinews that his company may be “about ready for round two” in the process of resubmitting the hotel proposal to the City of Buffalo’s Common Council and Planning Board.

“If we were to go through the re-zoning process again it could be arduous,” said Savarino.

In July, Savarino “withdrew” the proposal which is undergoing a “do-over,” according to Vice President of Savarino Companies, Eva Hassett.

In related news, several residents around the area of the proposed hotel were speculating that current roadwork to repair and add sewer lines on Forest Avenue were part of the construction process for the proposed hotel. Savarino has denied those claims.

“We are certainly not doing any work on the site nor is any work being performed on our behalf or at our direction [in relation to the hotel],” said Savarino.

So far, the proposal has not been resubmitted to the City’s Common Council or Planning board and there is no word on when the proposal will be resubmitted.

Wyndham Hotels, which is owned by Cendant Corporation, has not commented on the proposal despite several attempts to contact them.

This exclusive interview features first-hand journalism by a Wikinews reporter. See the collaboration page for more details.

Short-tailed bats to be transferred to Kapiti Island, New Zealand

Thursday, February 3, 2005

Tararua Ranges, New Zealand — In an attempt at a world first twenty short-tailed bats are to be moved by the New Zealand Department of Conservation from the Tararua Ranges to Kapiti Island. If the transfer to predator-free Kapiti works, it will become the first time that bats have ever been trans-located.

All previous attempts at moving bats have failed due to their natural homing instincts. However scientists with the Department of Conservation, are aiming to overcome this by shifting juveniles. The young bats, which weigh in at only 14 grams each, were born in the week around New Year and were raised at Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre near Eketahuna.

Conservation Minister Chris Carter said that while the trial was risky, it was also worthwhile. “A willingness to push boundaries and try new things is exactly what conservation in New Zealand needs,” he said.

New Zealand Immigration An Alternative Path For The Recent Graduate

New Zealand Immigration – An Alternative Path For the Recent Graduate

by

Riki Clark

I immigrated to New Zealand about 10 years ago. Now although it was 10 years ago, some things do ring true today as they did then. The truth of the matter is you will be confronted with some big questions and how you answer those questions will directly affect the outcome of your immigration process.

The first questions one has to ask is, Why do I want to immigrate? What is it I am seeking exactly? Why New Zealand? What does it have, that will provide me with the lifestyle I am searching for. You see, the reasons why I point out these obvious questions is, I did not ask these things when I immigrated to New Zealand but fortunately for me it worked out and here I am 10 years on and loving my lifestyle. When I decided to come over 10 years ago, the furthest I traveled was around a monopoly board, no not quite as bad as that, but I was bored with my life in South Africa, I had exhausted my career, I had built a house from scratch I had traveled Southern Africa quite a bit and was seeking something fresh and new. Something that would put a new found spring in my step, some different filters through which I could view the world. New Zealand had has a lot of similarities to back home but on a smaller scale, they love their rugby, the great outdoors, they are extremely family and children oriented and so forth and so on. There are wonderful benefits to living here and I enjoy the feeling it provides. There is the hustle and bustle of city life as you would find in any country, but New Zealand is just unique. This article though is not about the beauty and wonder of New Zealand, the web is full of sites that will do a much better job of promoting New Zealand. With a rich history of immigration, Canada is an extremely pluralised, multicultural society always in need of the skills, talents and enthusiasm of newcomers to continue to grow. Today, Canada is home to immigrants from all over the world, and it continues to attract people from all over the world who want to migrate and live there. Immigrants are attracted to this beautiful country as it promises stability, prosperity and peace. Although many countries are tightening their immigration procedures, immigration to Canada has remained steady. Canada remains committed to its immigration program, constantly reviewing and implementing new ideas and policies to ensure that the process is not only fair, but efficient. In a recent proposal by Citizenship and Immigration, the Canadian government is expected to fast-track people from countries that are generally deemed safe who make a visa application, in an attempt to speed up the laborious and lengthy process that has been Canadian immigration.

Interview: Danny O’Brien of the Electronic Frontier Foundation

Tuesday, January 24, 2006

January’s second Interview of the Month was with Danny O’Brien of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) on 23 January in IRC.

The EFF is coming off a series of high-profile successes in their campaigns to educate the public, press, and policy makers regarding online rights in a digital world, and defending those rights in the legislature and the courtroom. Their settlement with Sony/BMG, the amazingly confused MGM v Grokster decision by the Supreme Court of the United States, and the disturbing cases surrounding Diebold have earned the advocacy organization considerable attention.

When asked if the EFF would be interested in a live interview in IRC by Wikinews, the answer was a nearly immediate yes, but just a little after Ricardo Lobo. With two such interesting interview candidates agreeing so quickly, it was hard to say no to either so schedules were juggled to have both. By chance, the timing worked out to have the EFF interview the day before the U.S. Senate schedule hearings concerning the Broadcast flag rule of the FCC, a form of digital rights management which the recording and movie industries have been lobbying hard for – and the EFF has been lobbying hard to prevent.

Why Malpractice Insurance Is Important For Medical Professionals

If you are one of the many busy medical professionals working today, you owe it to protect yourself from any malpractice. Having medical malpractice insurance will protect you and give you peace of mind if you are involved in any type of lawsuit.

A good example is a friend who was once to be an owner of a major hospital in Agana Memorial hospital located in Agana, Guam.

He and a couple of his co-physicians were in the process of doing a heart surgery. Unfortunately, the patient died while they were in the middle of the actual surgery. They tried their best to save the life of that patient but, it was too late for him to be revived.

The patient was pronounced dead and the family was informed of what happened. A couple of months after the incident happened, and my friend received a letter from a lawyer in regards to a lawsuit from the bereaved family. They were asking for $5 million dollars for settlement. My friends malpractice insurance at that time only covered for the amount of $1 million. He lost the case and ended up selling his share at the hospital. He was under a great deal of pressure to raise the money that he needed to cover the rest of the required funds.

To make a long story short, if he had been covered for more than a million by malpractice insurance, then perhaps he may have not had to suffer that situation. He could have been one of the owners of the hospital and would be receiving monthly income from the hospital. But he lost everything including his share at hospital. He needed to sell everything to pay the settlement. It is very unfortunate to have that type of situation especially if you have a family and your kids are still young. This could have been avoided if he had enough medical malpractice insurance coverage to cover everything. Thats why I believe that it is in your best interest to have the maximum amount of medical malpractice insurance while you are still active in any medical field. You never know when one of your patients might decide that you didnt provide adequate care.It is also recommended to deal with a reliable insurance company who specializes in this type of coverage. There are many insurance carriers to deal with, but working with a reputable company will ensure that you will be covered in the event of any medical malpractice.
