Marc Ouellette

Are you wondering if you are as healthy as you could be? Have you been considering that you may need to modify your lifestyle to be healthier? This guide has some simple questions to help you determine where you should focus your efforts.

Have you recently had a physical examination by a health care professional? If not, you may need to make an appointment so that you can review the results of one. A medical professional or fitness trainer can help you determine if your BMI, or body mass index, is at a healthy level. He or she can also help you understand your cholesterol levels, and any adjustments you may need to make to your diet.

How do your clothes fit? Do you have several different sizes in your closet? If your pants keep getting tighter, you may need to consider losing a few pounds. If you have multiple sizes of garments in your closet, it is a sign that your weight fluctuates too much. Look at your clothes to see if you have avoided this problem by purchasing garments with elastic in the waist, or that are designed to fit multiple sizes.

Do you regularly engage in fitness activities? Consider how often you perform aerobic or strength training exercises, including activities like weightlifting, kickboxing and running . If you do not work out at least three to five times each week, you may want to think about increasing your activities. You can find fun and varied ways to meet this suggestion, including diverse suggestions as pilates, yoga and swimming.

Could you quickly walk up and down five flights of stairs? If you would become out of breath, you need to improve your cardiovascular health. If your legs could not handle it, they need strengthening. If you live or work in a building with stairs, use them instead of the elevator to give your heart and legs a regular workout.

Do you eat foods that are low in fat and high in fiber and vital nutrients? If not, you need to consider making changes to your consumption habits. You will discover that it is easier to perform regular exercise if you are eating healthier foods. You should also drink plenty of water, and eat fresh fruits and vegetables every day.

If you face these questions directly and answer them honestly, you can begin to see the areas you need to work on for your physical health. Develop a routine that addresses your requirements. Your body and mind will feel better when you make these changes.

Wikinews interviews former Republican U.S. Senator Bob Smith on his latest run for office

Sunday, June 21, 2009

Earlier this month, former Republican U.S. Senator Bob Smith announced his candidacy for Florida’s open Senate seat in the 2010 midterm election. Smith, who was one of New Hampshire’s senators for two terms — which amounts to twelve years — said he is running for office in his recently adopted home state due to his disapproval of the direction in which America is headed. He is very optimistic about the conservative change he can potentially bring to Congress which is currently controlled by liberal-minded members of the Democratic Party.

Smith has, however, some major hurdles to overcome in the Republican primary. He is facing two well known politicians who have been elected to statewide office numerous times. The chief of these is current Governor Charlie Crist, a moderate-to-liberal who is currently leading in the polls. The second is former Speaker of the Florida House Marco Rubio, a center-right 38-year-old who has been criticizing Crist for months on the support he has shown for President Barack Obama’s controversial economic stimulus package.

Despite trailing both in recent polls, Smith believes that the polls themselves are irrelevant as the primary is over one year away. He is devoting the remainder of this summer to building up grassroots and financial support for his campaign.

Wikinews reporter Joseph Ford had the opportunity to speak with him about his run this past weekend.

“We must deliver a message that appeals to all members of the Republican Party, and that will appeal to Floridians in the general election,” Smith proclaimed. “I am in this race because I want to make my experience as a U.S. Senator available to my fellow Floridians.”

Basketball: Djordjevic’s farewell game to be played July 3

Friday, June 24, 2005

Popular Serbian basketball player Aleksandar “Sasha” Djordjevic will play his last game in Belgrade on July 3. More then 60 players and coaches who worked with Djordjevic throughout his career will attend the game, and all ticket proceedings will go to the UNICEF “School without violence” program.

Djordjevic played in the Yugoslavian, Italian, Spanish and NBA leagues, as well as for the Yugoslavian national team. The 38 year-old won two European Championships and one World Championship. He is retireing as a player of Armani Jeans Milano and an MVP of the Lega A Basket.

“Everything hurts: my shoulder, elbow and joint. Everything ends, and so does a basketball career. They still have to invent medicines that would ease this pain,” said Djordjevic.

Croatian basketball player Dino Radja decided not to come to Belgrade. He told Djordjevic that he doesn’t want any booing, which would ruin the farewell game.

Improve Your Employment Prospects With A Blepharoplasty

byadmin

It’s no secret that the employment market is as tough as it’s ever been. The rise in flexible working practices means that the days when people could expect a job for life with a single company are long gone. Today’s job market is a tough one, so it makes sense to ensure you do all that you can to remain ahead of the game and maximize your chances of being the successful candidate at the interview. In addition to having the right skills, qualifications and experience, looking right for the job is also critical. Find out how to enhance your appearance to help that dream job become a reality.

Lose Excess Fat

Unfortunately, research shows overweight and obese individuals are less likely to land that top employment spot. Studies indicate that employers perceive larger job candidates as more likely to be lazy, poorly disciplined and less intelligent. In addition to eating less and moving more, a growing number of people are turning to plastic surgery to help them look their best. Residents of large cities such as Newark or Paterson (are there more affluent cities we can target? Livingston, Caldwell, franklin lakes.. although not as populated?), New Jersey find blepharoplasty surgery allows them to lose the excess fat that can gather around the eye lid area, leading to a firmer, more engaging appearance.

Don’t Let Your Age Show

Older job candidates are often overlooked in the workplace. Perceived as being slow and perhaps incapable of adapting to change in the way which younger people can, employers frequently find reasons to turn away more mature job applicants. It makes sense that retaining a youthful appearance is often the best way of maximizing your employment chances. Obtaining a blepharoplasty surgery will often give you a much younger looking eye, which makes a positive difference to your overall appeal.

Get an Energetic Look

Even if you’re not beginning to show the ravages of time, some eyes naturally have a single crease in the eyelid or a less pronounced double crease. Some people feel that investing in blepharoplasty surgery to produce a significant double crease in the eyelid can leave them with eyes which appear to be rounder and more alert. This may give them a more energetic look which is appreciated in the workplace.

If you feel that your eyes are holding you back from achieving the career success you’ve always wanted, why not visit the Wise Center for Plastic Surgery in Wayne, New Jersey and see what Dr. Wise can do for you? As a skilled and experienced surgeon, Dr. Wise provides expert care and makes modern blepharoplasty surgery a quick and straight-forward procedure. Why not contact our office for a consultation and see what a difference it can make?

Scottish lawyer denies death of Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

A Scottish lawyer today denied reports that Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi had died, after it was reported on Sky News earlier today that “unidentified sources” had said that he was dead.

The reports came onto Sky News at around 16.00 BST today. The information could not be confirmed, and it was not immediately clear where Sky News had obtained their information. Megrahi is suffering from terminal prostate cancer. Scottish Cabinet Secretary for Justice Kenny MacAskill MSP decided on 20 August 2009 to grant Megrahi compassionate release from Greenock Prison in Glasgow, Scotland and to allow him to return to Libya, after medical advisers reported that he was likely to die in just three months.

On Wednesday, Megrahi’s lawyer, Tony Kelly, responded to the claims made, saying that “it’s absolutely untrue. He’s definitely not dead. I’m not saying anything about his health condition other than the fact he is alive and breathing.” He declined to release any information about Abdelbaset’s current health condition. Following these comments, Sky News removed the information from their website.

SAHTECH, SEMI, and Semiconductor Industry to promote “SEMI Safety Guideline” in Taiwan

Wednesday, April 2, 2008

“Localization of ‘SEMI Safety Guideline'”, executed by Safety and Health Technology Center of Taiwan (SAHTECH) and supervised by Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI), was announced today in Hsinchu, Taiwan.

This localization included several fields on health and safety of semiconductor manufacturing, certification testing on electrical devices, evaluations on fire or natural diseases, and environmental issues on semiconductor manufacturing devices, etc.. Companies and manufacturers from the semiconductor industry also paid more attentions on this guideline because issues on carbon-savings, earthquakes, fire diseases, and environment-efficiencies were included into this guideline.

This [safety] guideline was originally promoted by SEMI since 1975 and was set up according to industry infrastructures in Europe, America, Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. Currently, its standards from the S1 to S25 was completely ruled by several world-class executives in semiconductor industry, and the S26 standard for FPD industry, proposed in Taiwan, was also in several arrangements with the other countries.
The semiconductor industry is a high-value industry in every country. If a fabrication plant (fab) was vandalized with fire or earthquake, how will a company decrease its lossless after a disease? As of some examples from the other countries, several companies didn’t pay more attentions on devices’ safety and finally got a damn trouble on counting lossless after a disease. By the way, voltages on electric using will take effect on energy especially the wasting of CO2. We [the semiconductor industry in Taiwan] hope this announcement will drive on global safety standards.
Generally, the designs of a fab will take effect on possibilities when a disease take place in, and its scale will chain much wasting on manufacturing devices and materials. For example, when using fluorine in a fab, a company would consider using a gas tank car rather than a steel bottle. But due to environment and carbon-saving issues, some evaluations should be tested in a fab.

On the other side of the incoming trade show of 2008 SecuTech Expo, scheduled after 2 weeks at Taipei World Trade Center, not only main fields on security devices, information security, and fire & disease preventions, the digital monitoring will be a hot topic in security industry. For applications on fire & disease preventions, because its issues contained industrial applications and ESH (Environmental, Safety & Health) managements, if a company want to decrease the ratio of fire disease or earthquake, companies from safety and related industries should pay more attentions on disease preventions.

Ireland votes to overturn 35-year-old constitutional ban on abortion

Sunday, May 27, 2018

In the official result of Friday’s Irish referendum over the legality of abortion, referendum officer Barry Ryan announced yesterday 66.4% of voters favoured overturning the eighth amendment of the constitution. Introduced in 1983, the eighth amendment made abortion constitutionally illegal. Irish Taoiseach — Prime Minister — Leo Varadkar said supporting legislation, to be framed following the result of this referendum, is to be “enacted before the end of this year”.

More than 2.1 million people voted on the referendum on Friday. With a 64.1% turnout, 1,429,981 voted in favour of eliminating the abortion ban while 723,632 voted to keep it. The results were announced at Dublin Castle. About 6000 voters spoiled their votes. Calling it “an historic day”, Prime Minister Varadkar said it was “a great act of democracy.” Ministers said they would form laws allowing medical termination of pregnancy in the first trimester, twelve weeks, of pregnancy, and under special cases until the 24th week. The legislation is to be formed after discussion with medical experts.

Since the amendment, Article 40.3.3 of the Irish constitution, in 1983, which gave an unborn child equal rights to life as the mother, hundreds of thousands of women traveled to different countries for the medical termination of pregnancy, while some used medical drugs illegal in Ireland to terminate the pregnancy.

“Savita Matters, Women Matter” was one of the slogans used by the supporters who wanted to repeal the amendment. In October 2012, a 31-year-old dentist of Indian origin, Savita Halappanavar, died from sepsis at a Galway hospital after she was denied abortion for a protracted miscarriage. She was told by a midwife that termination of pregnancy would not be possible since Ireland was a “Catholic country”. Halappanavar’s photo was used for posters by supporters who wanted the 35-year-old amendment repealed. In 2016, the current Roman Catholic Pope, Pope Francis, described abortion as a “very grave sin” and a “horrendous crime”.

Halappanavar’s father Andanappa Yalagi told Hindustan Times, “We’ve got justice for Savita. What happened to her will not happen to any other family. I have no words to express my gratitude to the people of Ireland at this historic moment.” 39 of 40 Irish constituencies voted in favour of repealing the law, while voters in only one constituency, Donegal, voted against — 51.87% opting to keep the anti-abortion laws. After the result was announced, the crowd were chanting Savita’s name in front of Dublin Castle.

Cora Sherlock, an anti-abortion activist, said, “what we voted on today is the ending of human life.” “I will accept the will of the Irish people, at the same time I will make it very clear what I feel of the campaign that has taken place. We will now regroup and find out what our next move is”, she added. Another activist, David Quinn, said, “The result today is basically a reversal of the 1983 result. On that occasion the defeated side did not simply slip away.”

“The people have said that we want a modern constitution for a modern country”, Prime Minister Varadkar said. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau later congratulated Varadkar on Twitter, saying: “What a moment for democracy and women’s rights.”

What Is The Difference Between Interest Rate And Annual Percentage Rate (Apr)?

What is the difference between interest rate & APR?

Your interest rate is the monthly cost you pay on the unpaid balance of your home loan. An Annual Percentage Rate (APR) includes both your interest rate and any additional cost or prepaid finance charges such as the origination fee, points, private mortgage insurance, underwriting and processing fees. (Your actual fees may not include all of the items above.)

While your interest rate is the rate at which you will make your monthly mortgage payments, the APR is a universal measurement that can assist you in comparing the cost of mortgage loans offered by different mortgage lenders.

Don’t compare mortgage offers based on interest rate alone. Consider their annual percentage rate (APR).

When you’re shopping for a mortgage, comparing offers can be difficult. The interest rate lenders use to determine your monthly payment (also called the note rate) is only one part of the overall cost of a mortgage. That’s why it’s misleading to compare loans by looking only at this number. A better means of comparison is the annual percentage rate, or APR.

The APR formula

The APR formula combines a loan’s interest costs with other fees charged by a lender over the life of the loan, and expresses them as a yearly percentage. The APR is therefore a better reflection of the true cost of borrowing than interest rates alone and is a good benchmark for comparing loan offers.

How it works

Here’s an example of how a comparison of APRs works in the case of two loan offers for a 30-year, fixed-rate loan of $300,000:

Offer A: Quotes an interest rate of 6.5 percent, plus one discount point and an origination fee of 2 percent.

Offer B: Quotes an interest rate of 6.4 percent, but charges two discount points, the same origination fee, and higher closing costs.

While the second loan may carry a lower interest rate and a lower monthly payment, a comparison of the APRs indicates that it is actually slightly more expensive overall because of the higher upfront fees:

Other costs

While comparing APRs is far more useful than simply comparing the note rate when considering different mortgage offers, it does have some limitations: – Some upfront costs are not included in the formula, such as the home appraisal, credit reporting fee and title fee — and these may vary from lender to lender. Don’t forget to ask for a good faith estimate of closing costs, and ask which ones are excluded from the APR. – The APR is much more useful for fixed-rate mortgages than for adjustable-rate loans. Because no one can predict how interest rates will change over the years, the APR for adjustable-rate mortgages is based on forecasts, which may turn out to be inaccurate. – The APR assumes you will keep the loan for its full term, which may be up to 30 years, but few homeowners ever keep a mortgage this long. If you plan to refinance within five to seven years, a loan with higher upfront fees can end up being more expensive than its APR suggests.

Somalian pirates capture military ship, weapons, tanks

Friday, September 26, 2008

Somalian pirates captured a Ukrainian military ship containing weapons, tanks, and ammunition on Thursday. The weapons seized ranged from grenade launchers to 33 Soviet tanks, the Ukrainian defense ministry told the press. 17 multi-national crewmen were also captured.

The “Faina” was making a delivery to the Kenyan government, which is a Western ally against terrorism.

The ship had taken a detour to avoid the pirate-controlled Somalian coast, which is notorious for holding ships and cargo ransom. Experts expect the pirates to ransom off the tanks, because they don’t have the ability to remove or use them.

The Russian navy deployed a warship on Friday to assist Somalia in securing the coastline and re-secure the ship. According to Vladimir Vysotsky, the head of the Russian Navy, “Russian ships will not be involved in any international operations,” as “they will do this job on their own.”

US military spokesman Bryan Whitman reported that the US is monitoring the events closely, because of the type of cargo captured.

Canada, meanwhile, has been assisting the UN by escorting aid ships to the war-torn area since August. Canadian officials announced they would be continuing escorts for another four weeks, to the relief of about 2.4 million Somalians receiving the aid.

Thousands of trapped miners rescued in South Africa

Thursday, October 4, 2007

As many as 3,200 mine workers became trapped in the in Elandsrand mine, a gold mine in South Africa about 50 miles (80 km) west of Johannesburg in Carletonville, Gauteng, after an incident on October 3. All miners have been rescued, and none of them were injured. The mine is owned by Harmony Gold Mining Corporation.

The mining company says that a lift electrical cable broke on a basket that was carrying miners, trapping thousands at least 2,200 meters (1.3 miles) below the earth’s surface. Reports from MSNBC and the Guardian Unlimited say that the shaft may have collapsed when a water or air pipe burst. The rescue operation went well with no complications, with the rescue taking just under 24 hours to complete.

“They were underground when the accident happened and they were not able to surface because an electric feeder cable that is connected to the mine lift was severed,” said a spokeswoman for the mining company, Amelia Soares. The snap was caused by a “fatigued” air pipe which burst and fell down the shaft damaging the “steelwork and electrical feeder cords,” added Soares. “They are all in good condition.”

“They are all safe. There have been no injuries or deaths,” said CEO of Harmony mining, Graham Briggs who also said that the miners were previously contacted and were given “food and water.”

Earlier reports had stated that Lesiba Seshoka, a spokesman with the National Union of Mineworkers, said that the miners have not been heard from for hours and that they could have been enduring temperatures as high as 105 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius).

“This is a terrible situation. The only exit is blocked, probably by a fall of ground,” said Seshoka.

Rescue workers used a mine shaft that is next to the damaged one in an attempt to reach the trapped miners, and lifted them out, 75 at a time. There was no emergency exit in the shaft which is reported to have “not been maintained for ages,” added Seshoka.

“An escape route is the most important thing and they have failed miserably. They need to ensure that the shaft is maintained. This is why we have this disaster. Our main worry is for more than 3,000 people who are underground,” said National Union of Mineworkers for S. Africa chairman, Deon Boqwana.

Current reports say that “negligence” was the initial cause for the pipe burst and that there has been a history of negligence from the mine. “We suspect negligence. Because of continuous operations there is no time to make adequate checks,” said the President of the Miners union, Senzeni Zokwana to reporters during a news conference.

The Elsrand mine is currently under development and has been since February 2001 when Harmony bought the mine. Officials state that the mine will remain closed for a minimum of six weeks, while an investigation is performed, and the mine is deemed safe for miners to continue working in it.

The mine is located in the Witwatersrand Basin of South Africa, which is said to be the location of the largest area of raw gold on the planet.
