China and Europe face new avian flu outbreaks

Wednesday, October 19, 2005

China has announced a new outbreak of avian flu today along with similar cases in Russia, Romania, and Macedonia.

China’s news agency reported that 2,600 birds have died of the H5N1 strain in northern China, declaring that the outbreak was found in a breeding facility in Hohhot, the capital of Inner Mongolia. The government maintains the epidemic is under control.

Russia is waiting for confirmation that it was the H5N1 strain that killed several hundred ducks near Moscow; if the tests return positive it will be a major spread of the virus across the Ural Mountains, into European Russia.

A small village in southern Macedonia also suspects the strain. Plans are already made to kill 10,000 birds to contain the outbreak.

Romania confirmed that there has been another outbreak in the Danube Delta area. The strain was confirmed there last weekend, whereupon 4,500 birds were destroyed.

H5N1 is the strain scientists fear could be transmitted from human to human, causing a flu pandemic. So far 50 people have died of it, all having worked closely with birds. It is not easy to pass the disease from bird to human.

Why Choose Live In Home Care}

Why choose live-in home care

by

Sia BenetCaring for an elderly person is a top priority and as a relative, you want to make sure they are safe all the time and happy, able to enjoy their life. However, it is not always possible to be by their side and offer your support, so finding a solution is necessary. Instead of placing the person in a nursing home, it is better for them to continue living in their home, comfortably and securely. With live-in home care this is possible. There are agencies that provide the most suitable and experienced caregivers for live-in care and you get to choose the one you need. Looking into live-in home care might be confusing at first and you might not know how this system works, how much it costs and how you can find the best agencies. Once you take everything step-by-step and learn more about the subject, you will see exactly if it is suitable for your case. Usually, elderly is taken into nursing homes, especially by relatives who are not able to care for them constantly. This is not always the best idea, it can be traumatic for the elderly, as they are separated from their belongings and the home they care for so much. Live-in care implies allowing them live in their homes and having a caregiver that moves into a room. Caregivers that move within the house are able to care for the person all day long and in emergency situations, during the night as well. The best part is that the elderly will have a person by their side at all times, will cook for them, help with the chores, go for a walk, shopping and more. It is always pleasant having someone around the house to talk to and prepare meals. Of course, caregivers are experienced and qualified, they are able to provide assistance in certain medical conditions and help with treatments and medication, as indicated by the medical provider. Also, in case the person wants to go visit someone, go to a celebration, event or such, the caregiver can go along and assure transportation, making sure everything is in order. To make things even better, you get to choose the caregiver for live-in home care. You can get in touch with a specialized agency and ask about recommendations and find suitable candidates. Afterwards, you can interview them and choose the one that meets your needs and you feel comfortable with. A room has to be provided to the caregiver, as they need to have their own personal space and rest during the night. Peace of mind is assured with live-in care, knowing that someone is available around the clock and lives within the house, able to provide assistance and daily communication. Elderly usually lacks this relationship and they tend to feel left out. But when they have someone by their side, showing them how great life is and helping them stay on track, their lifestyle is improved and they get to live happily and in great comfort, not having to move in a nursing home.

Have you thought about

Thursday, April 19, 2007

Three people are dead after five “brothers” attacked employees at the Bible publishing firm Zirve Publishing House in Malatya, Turkey. Two of the victims were Turkish and the other was German.

The employees had their throats slashed and were tied up at the hands and ankles according to police.

Later after the attack, four men were arrested. One was being treated for serious wounds when he attempted to jump out of a window when police went to chase him. All of the alleged killers are between 19 and 20 years old.

According to police, the “five brothers” carried a letter saying “We are going to our deaths.”

“[I condemn the attacks] in the strongest terms.[We will] do everything to clear up this crime completely and bring those responsible to justice,” said Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the German Foreign Minister.

“This is savagery,” said Recep Tayyip Erdo?an, the Turkish Prime Minister.

Protests were taking place at the firm recently after the firm was accused of “proselytizing” a Muslim nation, but it is not known if the murders are related to the protests.

The names of the victims or suspects have not been released.

U.S. Supreme Court hears arguments on constitutionality of lethal injection

Monday, January 7, 2008

The U.S. Supreme Court is hearing arguments on the constitutionality of the use of lethal injection as a method for the imposition of the death penalty in the United States. Two men, Ralph Baze and Thomas Clyde Bowling Jr., who were convicted of murder in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and sentenced to death, sued the state in 2004 arguing that the use of lethal injection as a method of imposition of capital punishment violates the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment.

Thirty-seven states and the Federal Government have capital punishment for some crimes, all except Nebraska (which uses electrocution) use lethal injection. The process uses three chemicals in a “cocktail”, which, by the procedures that are used to apply them to the condemned, (three injections given consecutively) allegedly “create a significant and unnecessary risk of inflicting severe pain that could be prevented by the adoption of reasonable safeguards”, their lawyers said in court papers. “Kentucky seeks to execute in a relatively humane manner and has worked hard to adopt such a procedure,” Kentucky Attorney General Gregory Stumbo has said. The state has also argued in its brief against supporting the plaintiffs’ appeal that it will lead to “an endless road of litigation. … Condemned inmates will never run out of ideas for changes to the procedures, drugs or equipment used during lethal injection.”

Baze was scheduled to be executed on January 8 after Governor of Kentucky Ernie Fletcher signed his death warrant, but the Kentucky Supreme Court suspended his execution on September 12, 2007, arguing it needed more time to examine arguments he had made in a separate appeal. He was convicted of killing Powell County Sheriff Steve Bennett and Deputy Arthur Briscoe in 1992 while the lawmen were trying to serve him with arrest warrants. Bowling was convicted of killing Edward and Tina Earley in Louisville in 1990.

According to the article on lethal injection in Wikipedia, the three chemicals used are Sodium thiopental to render the offender unconscious; Pancuronium/Tubocurarine: to stop all muscle movement except the heart, causing muscle paralysis, collapse of the diaphragm, and would eventually cause death by asphyxiation; and Potassium chloride to stop the heart. The chemicals apparently cannot be combined together as they could precipitate into a solid and be ineffective. It is argued that thiopental is a very short-term anesthetic and may wear off during the procedure, causing anesthesia awareness and excruciating pain from the effects of the other drugs.

In oral hearings today, the justices seemed skeptical that the chemical concoction causes extreme pain or that a better method was available. A lawyer for one of the plaintiffs argued that if insufficient anesthetic is given, when the inmate is given the paralyzing drug, they will experience agonizing pain, but be unable to react, and that it is even illegal in Kentucky to euthanize animals in this fashion. Some of the justices have considered sending the case back for further hearings to determine if a single barbiturate would be superior to the current method.

While the Supreme Court has examined the application of the death penalty many times over the past 40 years, this is the first time the court has reviewed the issue of the method of execution in 100 years, according to lawyers for the plaintiffs. A ruling is not expected until June. There are about 3,000 people on death row in the United States, and about 60 are executed each year. Since the case was accepted by the Supreme Court, all executions in the United States have been temporarily suspended pending the decision.

The case name is Baze v. Rees.

According to the Taipei Computer Association, the show and forum organizer, the digital content industry in Taiwan was apparently grown up recent years as Minister of Economic Affairs of the Republic of China Steve Ruey-long Chen said at Opening Ceremony yesterday. Without R&Ds from cyber-gaming, and basic conceptions from policies and copyright issues, this (digital content) industry will be fallen down in Taiwan. Imperial College London geology students fined in China for “illegal map-making”

Monday, January 5, 2009

Three British geology students of Imperial College London have been fined in China for “illegal survey and map-making activities”, according to local media. In addition to making maps, the students were researching fault lines and earthquake activity in Xinjiang — a tense Muslim province to the west of the country where anger against Chinese rule sparked deadly attacks in 2008.

The students were gathering additional data in several regions, including Kashgar, the ancient Silk Road trading post, and an oasis city in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China.

Under Dr. Jian Guo Liu, the students’ supervisor at Imperial College, they also had been in the poor desert village of Keping, where in May local authorities burned the local mosque due to “unlawful religious activities”. Of the three students, two of them, a PhD student aged 23, and a Master of Science student aged 22, went to Aksu Prefecture for their research.

In September, State Security Bureau officials had investigated the students at a hotel for several hours. Thereafter, their equipment, including GPS devices, survey results, and data, were seized. The Aksu Land and Resources Bureau officers claimed they had gathered “illegal data” from 6,000 points which was valuable for mineral prospecting and topographical research.

In the leadup to last year’s summer Olympics in Beijing, China cracked down on map-making and data-collecting across the country. Despite having permission from the Earthquake Administration in the country, the students were fined a combined 20,000 yuan (2,940 dollars) but did not receive additional punishments. “The data they gathered would have been valuable in analysing mineral and topographic features of the areas,” Xinjiang Daily said. They returned to the UK on October 2.

According to The Procuratorial Daily, the Xinjiang prosecutors’ office approved 1,295 arrests of individuals and indicted 1,154 suspects from January to November 2008. The indictments were based on suspicion of “endangering state security.” In 2007, however, only 742 were arrested, while 619 of them were indicted for the same offense.
