US TV: Jay Leno bested by Conan O’Brien in late night ratings

Tuesday, November 9, 2010

Television audience ratings for U.S. TV host Conan O’Brien’s first TBS program Conan last night were higher than rival Jay Leno and his late night program on NBC, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. O’Brien’s ratings were also higher than CBS network’s David Letterman, as well as Comedy Central programs hosted by Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.

Monday marked O’Brien’s return to late night television after his departure as host of The Tonight Show on NBC following a dispute this year, in which Leno’s program The Jay Leno Show was canceled after poor ratings, and NBC reinstated Leno as host of The Tonight Show.

Conan O’Brien is enjoying a sweet, sweet victory in the ratings.

O’Brien’s debut program featured guests including curator Arlene Wagner of the Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum, actor Seth Rogen and actress Lea Michele. His guest schedule for Tuesday night’s program included actors Tom Hanks and Jack McBrayer, in addition to music from the group Soundgarden.

The premiere of Conan was watched by over 4.1 million viewers. Nielsen ratings data made public today showed that Leno’s program The Tonight Show was only watched by 3.5 million viewers, and Letterman’s Late Show was seen by 3.4 million people. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report were watched by 1.3 million and 1 million viewers, respectively.

O’Brien announced his move to TBS, a cable channel founded by Ted Turner and owned by Time Warner, in April.

O’Brien’s viewership trended towards younger people, with 2,451,000 individuals ranges from ages 18 to 34 – and 3,285,000 people in the 18 to 49 age demographic. Leno’s The Tonight Show, in comparison, only drew in 950,000 people in the same younger demographic breakdown.

In an analysis of O’Brien’s ratings win, Dave Itzkoff of The New York Times wrote, “the debut of ‘Conan,’ the new late-night show starring Conan O’Brien, got off to a strong start”. James Hibberd commented for The Hollywood Reporter, “Conan O’Brien is enjoying a sweet, sweet victory in the ratings.”

Romanian PM and Siemens discuss Electroputere privatisation

Friday, April 8, 2005The Romanian Prime Minister, C?lin Popescu-T?riceanu discussed on Thursday the involvement of Siemens in regard to the privatisation of Romanian locomotive company Electroputere.

Electroputere, which is based in the southern Romanian city of Craiova, remains one of the largest state-owned companies in Romania after the fairly rapid privatisation process of 2003 and 2004. There have been attempts to privatise the locomotive manufacturer for a long time, yet all of them failed. However, Gabriel Zbircea, the president of the Authority for the Recovery of State Assets (AVAS) declared in March of this year that they would resume the privatisation process by dividing the company into four divisions, each to be sold separately.

Siemens is expected to be a major potential buyer of Electroputere, especially regarding the magnitude of deals in transport infrastructure that the Romanian government has conducted up until now with the German corporation.

SEALs say US officer’s cover-up was reported by fake SEAL

Tuesday, December 21, 2004

Tampa, Florida –Frank Ford, an honorably discharged U.S. veteran sergeant who works as a California state prison guard has reported witnessing torture in Iraq and the cover-upactivities of his commanding officers: December 8, 2004, Veteran sergeant accounts US torture coverup. Ford says he was hustled out of Iraq for psychological evaluations at military hospitals in Germany and USA as part of an Army cover-up strategy. David DeBatto, who wrote the original article about Frank Ford states that every doctor that evaluated Ford found him to be completely normal, with absolutely no psychological or mental health issues. However according to VeriSEAL, which claims to provide independent and no-cost verification of Special Operations Forces personnel backgrounds, the cover-up accusations are being made by a fake SEAL member.

Ford has already made several unsubstantiated claims including being a member of President Nixon’s security detail, a medical doctor, a nobleman with a castle in Europe, a Navy SEAL and knowing the exact location of Saddam Hussein and Ali Hassan al-Majid known as “Chemical Ali”. Also Ford has said he has saved the life of a soldier in Iraq, but according to the sources familiar with the incident—doctors and other witness—his claims were exaggerated and he did nothing more than hold the wounded soldier’s IV bag. The name of Ford is listed at the Identified SEAL Impostors page from VeriSEAL.

When inquired about some of the Ford’s exaggerated stories, David DeBatto said:Ford IS an inveterate braggart. This is beyond question as far as I am concerned. However, although that trait may make him unpopular with some, it does not make him a liar. Some people seem to have a hard time separating the two.

According to Ford he attended a discontinued BUD/S program for Navy corpsmen during 1980’s as a doctor assigned to a Navy SEAL team. However Navy records do not list Ford among the program graduates. About this DeBatto said: he called himself “Doc” when I met him too at Fort Bragg in February 2003. However, I asked him right away if he was an MD or PhD. and he told me no, he was just a medic, but he has always been referred to as “Doc” since becoming a Navy medic over 30 years ago. It just kind of stuck he said. He also said he was in some kind of medical school or internship, which, upon later research, turned out to be true. It ain’t Harvard, but it is a legitimate medical school. Actually Frank Ford is a “Doctor of Naturopathy” by the Clayton School of Natural Healing in Alabama.

According to Col. C. Tsai, a military psychiatrist who examined Ford at the Army Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany, Tsai had found nothing at all unstable about Ford.” Tsai was also interviewed by Speigel Television in Germany on this issue. According to Capitain Vic Artiga, Ford’s company commander, who Ford implicates, he was evacuated for “combat stress” behavioal problems.

In a interview to Los Angeles Times reporter, Lt. Col. Timothy J. Ryan, Ford’s commander, said: all allegations of prisoner abuse in Samarra were investigated immediately and no wrongdoing was ever found. Lt. Col. Timothy J. Ryan is also implicated by Ford’s testimony.

Ford said that Artiga accused him of being “delusional” and gave him “30 seconds to retract or face psychiatric referral”. Artiga, who is a police officer in Redwood City as civilian, denied Ford claims:That’s just laughable. In my years as a policeman, I’ve done hundreds of investigations. I can tell yoou that the investigation we did was as thorough as they come.

According to Sergeant First Class Michael Marciello, an alleged witness, when Captain Vic Artiga saw an initial psychiatrist’s report, Artiga was, “livid”. He “stormed” back to the psychiatrist and “browbeat” her to change her report to read that Ford was mentally unstable, and ordered her to have Ford shipped out of the country. Ford was later strapped to a medical gurney and medvac’d out of Iraq. He was initially sent to Kuwait and eventually to Landstuhl, Germany. Ford then underwent psychological evaluation in Germany and also two bases in the United States for approximately 8 months.

The Ford accusation was reported by David DeBatto and the article can be seen at Salon News. The case is under investigation.

Injunction fails to stop decision on waterfront stadium in New Zealand

Thursday, November 23, 2006

Today an injunction that was filed in the High Court yesterday to stop the Auckland City Council and Auckland Regional Council from telling the Government which stadium they prefer has failed. The decision is over a new stadium located on the waterfront of Auckland, New Zealand or an upgrade of the already existing, Eden Park, Auckland. The stadium is for the final of the Rugby World Cup 2011, which New Zealand is hosting.

The injunction was filed by a group of five Aucklanders who believe that the decision is being rushed. The injunction was filed in the name of a private citizen to represent a group of five Aucklanders. Rodney Hide, leader of the ACT party and Member of Parliament (MP) and MP for the Green party, Keith Locke, are helping the fight for the injunction as they believe the Aucklanders have a strong case.

Justice John Priestley said that the group did not need this injunction because they could fight the stadium decision in the future by different means. A second injunction has already been filed for two days, starting December 11.

Mayor of Auckland, Dick Hubbard, said: “The council’s advisors have informed that processes have been proper and appropriate.”

Rodney Harrison, Queens Counsel (QC), said: “The group that lodged the injunction were Auckland ratepayers, residents and concerned citizens but none of whom could be called high profile. I have no idea what those decisions might be. Exactly how the defendants (local government) react to central Government requests or pressure is a matter for them.”

ARC chairman, Mike Lee attacked his own counsel Brian Latimore for failing to follow instructions at today’s High Court injunction hearing. The instruction were “not to oppose any injunction, merely to assist the court by explaining what was going on and leave the argument to the judge and the other parties.”

Mr Lee said: “We were there as peacekeepers not combatants and it seems this guy has gone in and opened fire.”

Patrick McGuire, one of the five Aucklanders who had sought the injunction, said that Mr Hide had introduced all of them to each other after they each wrote a letter to him with their concerns. Mr McGuire said it requires “public input”.

Mr Hide said that he “had acted as a middle-man, arranging for the members of the group to meet with lawyers.” Mr Locke and Mr Hide are working together because they are concerned the legal processes of the decision over which stadium will be chosen and how the decision will be made. Mr Hide said he did not like the waterfront stadium, “I’m not a lawyer but the legal advice we have had is that the injunction has a high chance of succeeding.”

The two councils, Auckland City and Auckland Regional, have been consulting the affected groups to see which decision they should go with. The Auckland City Council is currently in a meeting discussing the stadium decision and the Regional Council will do it tomorrow.

If the waterfront stadium was chosen then the stadium will be located on Ports of Auckland land and they want a guarantee that their running of the ports will not be affected. Denis Carlisle, president of the local Maritime union, said: “The Ports of Auckland are asking for guarantees that they will not suffer any financial loss from the stadium project, and likewise the Maritime Union will be seeking compensation for our members for any loss of work. The issue was about safeguarding Port of Auckland’s role as a major working port.”

“[The Ports of Auckland] is one of the key gateways between New Zealand and the global economy.”

Best Types Of Massages

By Luis M. Gomez

A massage is more than just a simple rub-down of your body by hands and fingers. Massage therapy spa is a fine and ancient art that has developed through many years but this art did not develop in a single linear fashion as one may chose to describe something such as the evolution of computers. In almost every culture that was known in history, massages were a part of almost every other healing process but this also meant that the art would develop and evolve differently through the ages and with time, different cultures, societies and civilisations had their own special variation of massage therapy. Some of which were simply a difference in techniques but others would become distinctly different from all others in terms of methods used, tools and even objective.

People choose to learn massage therapy and also get them done according their needs and the following are just a few in a list of many other massage types:

1. Deep Tissue Massage

This is a special kind of massage that is designed to relieve severe tension in the muscle and the connective tissue. This kind of massage therapy primarily targets the muscles underneath the surface muscles and is often recommended for individuals who experience consistent pain and those involved in extremely strenuous physical activities such as athletes. This massage works differently from one person to the next as we are built differently thus what one person calls deep another will call light and vice versa. If it’s not done properly or is done too forcefully, it could also result in one muscle ache being replaced by another. The massage is performed under a constant deep pressure. These are a specialty in many massage therapy spas.

2. Medical massage therapy

There are massage techniques and procedures that were developed specifically for the medical field. They include decongestive therapy, and light massages which are used to relieve pain. A Carotid sinus massage is a method that is used in the diagnosis of a medical condition called carotid sinus syncope. It can also be used to tell apart certain muscular conditions. Medical massage therapy is much more result oriented than the other types and will only focus on the diagnosed/prescribed area.

3. Eastern Massage Practices

There are very many massage practices and techniques that have arisen from the east many of which still carry on today while a few have been widely dismissed as being mythic in their effectiveness. These practices vary not just by the exact region from which they arose but some also have varied targets while others were meant to target specific parts of the body. Here are a few:

– Acupressure: This massage method that has its origin in Japan is very closely related and is quite similar to the Chinese practice called acupuncture due to the fact that it uses the fingers, hands and elbows to apply pressure to acupuncture points.

– Shiatsu: This is yet another massage practice that has its origins in Japan. Its name when translated means finger pressure and this is because it incorporates the method called Acupressure. It also involves and has techniques such as rolling, vibrating and brushing and the feet are also used to apply pressure on the back, legs and thighs.

– Hilot: This is a traditional healing technique that has its origin in the Philippines and incorporates massage techniques that relax stressed muscles. Manipulations of joints are also performed for the same purpose.

4. Swedish Massage

Yet another favorite in massage therapy spas and massage parlors, it applies five styles of long strokes and these are sliding/gliding, kneading, rhythmic tapping, friction and shaking. Swedish massage has been known to be very effective especially in relieving pain and relaxing stiffness in the joints.

Serbian Football Association complain about Swiss footballers Xhaka, Shaqiri eagle salute celebration

Monday, June 25, 2018

The Serbian Football Association, on Saturday, lodged a complaint with FIFA against Swiss footballers Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri for their eagle salute celebration. FIFA later launched an investigation for disciplinary actions against the two players.

In Friday’s match, Switzerland defeated Serbia 2–1 with goals from Xhaka and Shaqiri. Both the players celebrated their goals by making hand gestures resembling the double-headed eagle on the Albanian national flag. Xhaka and Shaqiri are both of Kosovar-Albanian origin, and grew up in Switzerland. Kosovo is a former Serbian province which separated from the country in 2008. Serbia, however, does not recognise Kosovo as a sovereign state. A large proportion of the 1.8 million citizens of Kosovo are ethnic Albanians.

Xherdan Shaqiri’s football boots had both an Albanian flag and a Swiss flag. After the match, the Serbian Football Association secretary general, Jovan Surbatovic, said he would raise the issues of the “boots, a question of several controversial flags and the celebration of both goals for Switzerland”. Per FIFA guidelines, players found guilty of “provoking the general public” face a fine as well as suspension for up to two matches.

After the match, Granit Xhaka said, “Frankly, my opponents did not interest me at all […] It was for my people, who always supported me. For those who did not neglect me, in my homeland, where my parents’ roots are. These were purely emotions.” Meanwhile Shaqiri, who scored the late winning goal said, “I can’t discuss the gesture I am afraid. We are footballers, not politicians[…] Emotions sometimes take over footballers and there was a lot of emotion out there.”

Swiss coach Vladimir Petkovi? said, “I think we all together need to steer away from politics in football and we should focus on this sport as a beautiful game and something that brings people together.”

Two Swiss government officials, Sports Minister Guy Parmelin and Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis supported Xhaka and Shaqiri’s celebration. Cassis said, “I have no doubt that you can feel patriotic emotions for the land which has taken you in without forgetting your roots”.

FIFA has also launched an investigation for disciplinary action against Serbian supporters for “the display of political and offensive messages”. Another action is being taken against Serbian Football Association president Slavisa Kokeza for asserting that the match officials, including German referee Felix Brych, were biased towards Switzerland.
