How Sand And Water Play Is Helpful To Kids}

Submitted by: Harry Yadav

Playing with water and sand is something most of the parents restrict their kids from. Most of them consider this type of games as dirty, but like everything else; it also has some positive aspects. However, actually playing with sand and water is not only something that kids are attracted to, but it also helps in their progress.

Sand and water game is not only meant for the beach. Take opportunities to help your kid play and learn something with water at home while taking bath, in the kitchen sink, or, in nice climate, in a paddling pond. Sand games at home need good weather conditions and a plot.

No special kinds of toys are essential for water games. Use a colander, a sponge, jugs and containers, a whisk, or other stuffs you have on hand to educate kids with the help of playing with water, according to Topmarks Education. Reprocess boxes and food containers to make use of as sand moulds that will help your kid to build up manipulative skills. You can even reuse a tire for a biodegradable home-produced sandbox. Of course, remember the plastic bucket and spade.

From trouble-free, pleasurable games kids learn a broad range of talents, beginning with motor skills and hand-eye management from pouring water to decorating items in the sand. They begin learning science from the actions of water at the time when it is poured from one jug to another and from floating and dipping bits and pieces. Playing in sand can help with counting and measurement skills, shape assessment, and “less” and “more” ideas.

When you are providing your kid with the instructions of early math and science ideas all the way through sand and water games, you are helping your kid to improve vocabulary and communication skills as well. Ask the little one, questions and get him to make prophecies regarding the actions of water as it moves from one container to another one of a special size or shape. Take two items and question your kid which will go under the water and which will float. Your kid’s inquisitiveness will make teaching and learning science an easy task.

Kids learn social skills from the games based on sand and water. Sandbox games with other kids need collaboration and sharing even as role playing motivate the thoughts. Creative water game can contain teaching ideas of care and maintain hygiene by bathing a doll in a small basin.

Sand and water games give rise to the level of creativity in kids. Show your kids how to make outline and shape with sand moulds and models in the sand with their fingers or stuffs such as combs or a small plastic rake. Put some sand on a plate to use it indoor and make learning to mark out letters and numbers added fun. Sand and water games or activities are things that even you can do with your kids that combine amusement, knowledge, creativeness, and you can spend quality time with your children as well.

Australian Prime Minister blames asylum seekers for “Children Overboard” scandal

Monday, February 27, 2006

Australian Prime Minister John Howard says the refugees he falsely accused of throwing their children into the ocean deserve no apology because they did the next worst thing – “they irresponsibly sank the damn boat, which put their children in the water”.

The “children overboard” affair became a controversial focus in the 2001 federal election campaign, when the Prime Minister was roundly accused of cynically exploiting Australia’s fears of illegal immigrants by demonising asylum-seekers. Mr Howard and senior ministers falsely claimed on the eve of the election that children had been thrown in the water to guarantee their rescue by the Australian navy.

The boat sank, and the crew of HMAS Adelaide saved 219 asylum-seekers. The then Defence Minister, Peter Reith, released dubious photos of the rescue as evidence that children had been thrown in the water. The Australian government only corrected the record after the election.

Mr Howard says: “They irresponsibly sank the damn boat, which put their children in the water. I’m sorry, if I had have been told definitively, if I had been told that that story was completely wrong, I would have said so, but I wasn’t,” he says in the book ‘The Howard Factor’.

“And my last act before the election was to put that video in the public domain so that I wasn’t accused of concealing it, because it was ambiguous. Watching that video, you couldn’t tell whether people were being thrown in the water or not, it was just impossible. But after all, they did sink the boat.” Mr Howard said the refugees “don’t carry any visible signs of being demonised”.

Figures from the Department of Immigration (DIMIA) about the 219 mainly Iraqi asylum-seekers, shows the group wound up with the highest success rate for all refugee claims made under the so-called Pacific solution. DIMIA 96.5 per cent of the Iraqis who were awarded humanitarian protection, though most have since been settled in New Zealand, not Australia.

Refugee rights advocate, Jack Smit, from the West Australian-based group Project SafeCom says: “Refugees don’t sink damned boats, Mr Howard!” He said in a media statement: “The Prime Minister remains one of the very few politicians in Australia who maintains the slandering descriptive word ‘illegals’ to denote boatpeople.”

“Refugees rarely sink their boats,” said Mr Smit, “Usually it is the people smugglers who do the sinking, sometimes the sinking is due to physical sabotage by sting operators working from countries such as Indonesia, and sometimes these sting operators are contracted by countries such as Australia.”

St. Anthony Foundation provides hope

Friday, September 23, 2005

On the corner of Golden Gate Ave. and Jones St. in the Tenderloin, San Francisco, right next to the Civic Center you can see a throng of low-income and homeless people lining up outside of St. Anthony’s Dining Room hall which opens up it’s doors everyday at 11:30 a.m. Volunteers dressed in St. Anthony Foundation shirts help keep the lines moving as hundreds of homeless and low income people shuffle their way towards the dining hall underneath the watchful eyes of a small statue of St. Francis of Assisi.

“There’s a lot of people who go hungry out here and it ain’t right.” says Jimmy Scott, a slightly brawny 44-year-old black man who has been living homeless in San Francisco for the past three years. “There are families out here with kids and everything and they have to walk around all night just to stay awake so they don’t get hurt or killed…Right here in the U.S. this is going on…it ain’t right.”

The dining hall, which has been open for the past 54 years, is owned by the St. Anthony Foundation which helps low income and homeless people and families in the Civic Center, Tenderloin, and SOMA areas with clothing, shelter, food, drug rehabilitation, and many other services. St. Anthony’s administrative offices are found at 121 Golden Gate Ave. with the majority of the foundation’s buildings on Golden Gate Ave. and Jones St.

“We are right in the heart of the homeless population of San Francisco,” says Barry Stenger, 55, who’s been working for the St. Anthony Foundation for one year, and is the Director of Development and Communications, “and people are pushed here because of the economic forces of San Francisco because it’s hard to be upper middle class in San Francisco.”

According to the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, “San Francisco’s cost of living remains one of the highest in the country” with the average household income in San Francisco being around $76,400 and the average price of housing being $543,000. Average household income for the United States in 2002, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, was $42,409 and the average price of housing for the United States according to the National Association of Realtors was $185,200 in 2004.

“We served our 32 millionth meal on Tuesday,” said Stenger, “and we serve 2,500 meals a day. Some of our people who work here actually get served [food] here because they spend all their money towards rent and medical costs.”

The St. Anthony Foundation was started by Fr. Alfred Boeddeker in 1950 one year after Fr. Boeddeker became pastor of St. Boniface church on Golden Gate St. where he was baptized as a child. During his lifetime, according to the foundation’s website, he was referred to as the “Patron St. of the Tenderloin” and had Boeddeker park named after him because of his, and his foundation’s, achievements with helping out the homeless and low income community.

“[St. Anthony’s] is a good thing,” said Jimmy Scott, “they provide a good service and they feed people and they clothe them and provide furniture when you get housing and give you groceries when you have AIDS. It’s a good little organization.”

“Our dining room is open 365 days a year.” Said Stenger. “Our other facilities are open seven days a week. We have a residence for senior women and our [free medical] clinic is open five days a week and we also have a furniture and clothing store. We have 12 programs all together.”

Some of those programs are the Father Alfred Center which provides 61 men two programs for getting out of drug and alcohol abuse, the Employment Program/Learning Center which helps participants in educational and employment opportunities and provides each one with a personal staff advisor, and a Senior Outreach and Support Services center which states its mission is to “promote independence, self determination, and alleviate isolation” for seniors who are 60 and older.

A few homeless people who were interviewed complained that St. Anthony’s had some staff who were rude and that they were kicked out of the dining hall; other homeless within the area refuted those claims saying St. Anthony’s has nice staff and only kicks people out who cause trouble.

“It’s a good place and good people. Everybody is so kind and so respectful and everything is under control.” Said John Henderson, a tall and skinny 57-year-old homeless black man who has only been living in San Francisco for close to two months because he recently moved there from Phoenix, Arizona. “It’s pretty cool because they’re under control because yesterday I saw at Glide [Memorial Church which also has services for the poor and low income] and they were handing out food boxes and people were just rushing in and the woman in charge there was freaking out and so she just sat down. That would never happen at St. Anthony’s.”

“And they clean too!” Henderson said laughing with a grin on his face referring to the fact that there are no drugs allowed in the premises. “Not that Glide ain’t clean if you know what I mean.”

“We [also] have a whole division that deals with justice education and advocacy to change the system that brings people to our doorstep.” Said Stenger. “We hear a lot of appreciation from the people we serve. We get a lot of testimony from our clients who have become clean and sober. Sometimes we have to push them a little to get them out the door because they love the [foundation] so much because it has changed their lives.”

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/AL-KY

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

Al Gerby Supplement Store: Nutritional Supplements At Downtown Katameya Mall, New Cairo}

Al Gerby Supplement Store: Nutritional Supplements at Downtown Katameya Mall, New Cairo

by

Cairo360

Arguably, the majority of shops in Cairo are aimed at the shopaholics amongst us, offering little more than clothes and shoes. However, with the summer fast approaching and fitness becoming a endemic of vanity amongst body-conscious Cairenes, there is an increase in demand for healthy, body building supplements.

Whilst many gyms often offer a range of proteins and vitamins on-site, not all are well-stocked with a variety of different brands. With several independent stores around Cairo, Al Gerby Supplement Store has set up shop at New Cairo’s Downtown Katameya Mall.

Resembling a booth rather than a shop, Al Gerby’s supplements are lined up neatly on shelves and grouped into logical sections, easily visible from behind a glass wall. The shop assistant wasn’t very forthcoming, and when asked about the difference between one supplement designed especially for women, and the unisex type, he was unable to give us an explanation. Despite having a number of well-known brands to choose from, those familiar with the range available overseas may be slightly disappointed to find there’s nothing new here.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlBpuUFe0LY[/youtube]

Protein powder from several brands was available, in a multitude of different sizes, largely imported from the US. A large variety of Isopure products are available in a decent range of flavours; Isopure carb-free, whey protein and Isopure mass. A huge bucket (3.5kg) of Isopure carb-free was available, along with regular sized tubs (450LE). Also in stock was Iso-femme (250LE), an oestrogen free protein powder aimed specifically at women.

The popular brand, Optimum Nutrition, was also in stock, with both pots and large bags of whey and serious mass protein. We also spotted Musclemeds, carnivore beef isolate, as well as 6.8kg bags of PharmaFreak, Mass Freak.

Amino Acid helpful in both weight-lifting and fat-loss programmes was available from several different brands, including Advanced Performance Nutrition (APN), Amino Freak and Nature’s Best. Similarly glutamine, an essential ingredient for faster recovery, was available from Maximum Human Performance (MHP) (500LE/kg) and MuscleMeds (250LE/300g).

Labrada Supercharge was one of the few pre-workout powders we saw, whilst a small pot of Labrada Lean Body (350LE) was the only fat-burner available for women. Cookie and cream protein bars are sold individually (25LE), as are protein milkshakes and black-top protein shakers.

Whilst Al Gerby is a little pricier than other supplement vendors, this small supplement store has a decent range of the basic pills and powders needed to supplement your workout routine.

Cairo 360 is a multi-award winning online magazine which serves as the leading critical guide to living in Cairo, Egypt. Developed by multimedia specialists Media Republic, the site is aimed at Cairenes and carries reviews and features of all the latest venues Cairo has to offer from restaurants and nightspots to art galleries and shopping. Cairo 360 also provides a comprehensive guide to events, and cinema listings, as well as ideas for travelling on weekends and a complete guide to home entertainment including DVDs, music, and books.

Goat head delivered to Chicago Cubs owner Tom Ricketts

Friday, April 12, 2013

Wednesday at 2:30pm Chicago local time, a goat’s head was delivered for Chicago Cubs owner Tom Ricketts at his office in Wrigley Field. The head was dropped off at Gate K by the unidentified male driver of a van, reportedly not by a member of the United States Postal Service.

The Chicago Police were notified of the incident, and are investigating. The driver of the truck was recorded on surveillance video.

In 1945, when the Cubs last competed in Major League Baseball’s World Series, Chicago restaurant owner Billy Sianis was ejected from Wrigley Field during the World Series after trying to bring a goat into the stadium. Following the incident, Sianis is alleged to have cursed the team, vowing they would never win the championship again. The incident has become part of Chicago Cubs’ fan lore.

The day of the incident, the Chicago Cubs game versus the Milwuakee Brewers was postponed due to weather. The Cubs organization is also in negotiations with the city of Chicago over possible renovations to Wrigley Field.

Pichilemu and Cobquecura, Chile rocked again by aftershocks

Friday, March 26, 2010

Two medium intensity seisms were registered in Chile. These quakes are aftershocks of the March 11 Pichilemu earthquake. According to the University of Chile Geological Survey, the first one took place at 9:59 local time (13:59 UTC); its epicenter was located 17 kilometers northeast of Pichilemu, with a magnitude of 4.7. It lasted about ten seconds. The second aftershock had a magnitude of 5.1, and occurred at the 10:57 local time (14:57 UTC), with its epicenter located 15 kilometers north of Cobquecura.

The National Emergencies Office graded the scale of the seisms on the Mercalli scale, which attempts to quantify the amount of physical damage caused by an earthquake. The intensities of the smaller aftershock were determined to be V in Pichilemu, III in Talca and II in San Fernando, while the larger 5.1 magnitude earthquake only hit IV in Pichilemu, but registered a IV in Talca as well, due to its closer proximity to that city.

Thursday morning the Municipality of Pichilemu posted a letter via Facebook to all those affected by the February 27 and March 11 earthquakes in the surrounding areas of Pichilemu, like Ciruelos, Alto Ramírez, and others. However, they didn’t name the village of Espinillo. The mayor of Pichilemu, Roberto Córdova, was criticized for not giving aid to the village. Córdova responded that he was “doing his best to aid [the surrounding areas]. [The Municipality] is going to replace the [balustrades] destroyed by the 11 March earthquake,” and “these places are receiving the aid they require.”
