Creekstone Farms sues USDA for refusing to allow mad cow testing

Monday, March 27, 2006

Creekstone Farms Premium Beef, an organic meatpacking company based in Arkansas City, Kansas, filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for what the company claims is threats by the USDA that it would face prosecution if it proceeds with plans to test nearly 100% of its beef for Bovine spongiform encephalopathy, also known as mad cow disease or BSE.

The USDA position is that allowing any meatpacking company to test every cow would undermine the agency’s official position, a position that holds to random testing as a scientifically adequate measure to assure safety. It also claims that 100% testing does not ensure food safety because the disease is difficult to detect in younger animals.

The USDA currently tests about 1% of cattle slaughtered in the U.S. The USDA’s objection is believed to be the result of pressure from larger meatpacking operations. In 2004, the president of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association told the Washington Post that “If testing is allowed at Creekstone, we think it would become the international standard and the domestic standard, too.” Creekstone Farms says tests cost about $20 per animal, increasing the cost of beef by about 10 cents per pound.

Wheelchair Accessible Construction

Submitted by: Beverly Walker

Every year, thousands of Americans suffer from diseases or injuries that require them to use a wheelchair. What type of impact does this have on society? If you are the loved one of one of those who must use a wheelchair, you may need to perform wheelchair accessible construction on the home to make it easier for them to move around and reach things. If you are the owner of a business, federal law may require that you make your facilities handicap accessible. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that public accommodations meet certain standards as to not discriminate against the handicapped, including those in wheelchairs.

What type of wheelchair accessible construction are you looking at? Homes as well as businesses should have wheelchair ramps, grab bars and handrails, and commercial washroom accessories. If you are helping a person with a wheelchair with their home, you will want something for them to sit on while showering, so a folding shower or tub seat will be necessary.

As far as wheelchair ramps, there are many types from which to choose. There are modular wheelchair ramps (strong, yet portable and affordable), solid wheelchair ramps (one piece more desirable if a permanent ramp is needed), folding wheelchair ramp (durable and lightweight for travel), and threshold wheelchair ramps (specifically designed for doorways). You will want to ensure the safety of any ramp you purchase, so as the dealer if it is ADA compliant. A slip resistance high traction surface is very important to have. You will need to ask yourself if the ramp will ever need to be carried with the individual that needs it. If so, you may want something lightweight so it can be easily moved. Many dealers offer aluminum ramps, which are sturdy yet lightweight. Check to see how easy and quick it is to set up the ramp.

One of the most important parts of wheelchair accessible construction in a home or business are bars and handrails. Grab bars and handrails are great accessories to have for those in wheelchairs, especially in the restrooms. These bars and handrails provide stability and extra support for those who need it. Handrails can also be used beside a ramp and is especially helpful if the ramp is very long. It helps the individual keep their balance and provides safety. Grab bars should be mounted securely. This involves screwing the hardware directly into wall studs or wood blocking. The ADA says that handrails must be securely anchored, mounted between 34 and 38 inches high, projected from the wall 1 1/2 inches, and the ends must be rounded off for safety.

Shower and tub seating is also a very important part of making a home ready for someone using a wheelchair. There are different types of seating including L-shaped shower seats and folding tub seats. It will probably be more convenient to have the seats mounted to the wall, rather than have seats that the individual has to place in and out of the tub.

The most important thing when working with wheelchair accessible construction is safety and security. Please ensure that all additions made are safe for the person to use and comply with ADA standards.

BP: New cap on Gulf of Mexico oil well in place

Thursday, July 15, 2010

For the first time since April 20, no oil is flowing into the Gulf of Mexico, though the halt may be temporary, as integrity testing began on a new sealing cap. The cap was installed on a leaking well in an effort by the BP energy company to contain oil spewing into the Gulf of Mexico. The previous containment cap, which was removed Saturday, had a much looser fit than the new one and allowed oil to escape into the Gulf. It took about three days for the cap to be removed, the site prepared, and the new one to be slowly lowered into position.

The energy company had planned to begin running integrity tests Tuesday to measure the performance of the well under pressure. The tests were delayed a day for further analysis, but clearance to proceed was given Wednesday afternoon, then a leak in a choke line had to be repaired. BP senior vice president Kent Wells announced at his Thursday afternoon briefing that the final valve on the cap assembly started to close at 1:15 PM Thursday and was fully closed at 2:25 PM, finally shutting in the oil flow. If the tests show that the well is strong enough, the sealing cap valves will likely remain closed. If the well cannot be safely closed from the top, the new cap is designed to funnel almost all the oil to ships above while two relief wells are constructed for a permanent fix. After the old cap was removed, oil flowed freely into the waters of the Gulf until the present cap was installed at about 7:00 PM CDT Monday (00:00 UTC Tuesday).

BP has stated that this oil containment system has never been deployed at the current depths, nor has it been tested in the conditions that it will be expected to operate in. During the testing period, which could last anywhere from six to forty-eight hours, all undersea oil containment systems will be temporarily suspended. The company made clear that, even if the tests succeed, this does not mean that oil leakage has permanently ceased.

Doug Suttles, a BP executive, explained that during the test, the well pressure will be carefully monitored. Suttles said at a Monday briefing that the ideal would be for tests to show high pressure around the seal, indicating that no oil is escaping. He also stated that on the other hand, the pressures could be lower than anticipated, leading to the assumption that the well is damaged and is leaking oil and gas into surrounding rock. If this were to happen, keeping the cap shut could further damage the well. The solution for this scenario is to reopen the valves and funnel most, if not all, of the oil to ships above.

Drilling of the first relief well was suspended until completion of the integrity test. Kent Wells explained at his Wednesday morning briefing that the first relief well is now 4 feet from the original well and there is a remote possibility that the pressure test could open a path to the relief well. Drilling of the second relief well has stopped at 16,000 feet so as not to interfere with the first well and to keep routing options open in case the first relief well fails. Even if the pressure tests do succeed and the main well is shut, work on the first relief well will continue until it intercepts the main well. When this occurs, mud and cement will be pumped into the well for a permanent seal. Containment and clean up operations will continue even after the relief wells are finished to deal with oil already released.

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill began on April 20 when the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded, killing eleven and marking the start of the worst offshore oil spill in United States history.

Egyptian doctor sentenced to fifteen years jail, 1,500 lashes in Saudi Arabia

Friday, November 14, 2008

Raouf Amin el-Araby, a 52-year-old Egyptian doctor who has been serving the Saudi Royal family for 20 years, was convicted of malpractice. Egyptian newspapers reported that he was accused of driving a Saudi princess “to addiction”, reportedly after treating a Saudi princess with painkillers.

Initially sentenced to 7 years and 700 lashes, he has been sentenced to 15 years and 1500 lashes, 70 a week, after making an appeal.

Family members, friends and colleagues gathered in outrage and grief outside the headquarters of Egypt’s doctors union, calling upon King Abdullah to pardon Raouf. “1,500 lashes is unprecedented in the history of Islam,” read one banner carried by protesters. “Who is responsible for the humiliation of our doctors abroad?” read another.

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) and the foreign minister are working hard to find a way to return Raouf home quickly. Hafez Abu Saeda, the director of EOHR, stated that the princess was prescribed the same medication that she was receiving in the United States, “so it is obvious that the doctor was not at fault for her addiction.”

Abu Saeda was astonished that the judge doubled the sentence and the lashes after the appeal. It is tantamount, he said, to penalizing Amin for asserting his right of appeal. “When you appeal against a sentencing it is the rule that it cannot go higher, but in Saudi Arabia it appears anything is possible,” said Saeda.

Protests in Egypt have driven the Egyptian foreign ministry to seek a solution, partly out of concern that negative repercussions may damage relations between Cairo and Riyadh.

A human rights lawyer said that he was given the first 70 lashes last week and he will get 70 more this week.

Health Insurance Plan The Easy Way To Getting Health Insurance

By Dana B. Smith

Even though more and more people are realizing that they need health insurance many are apprehensive about getting a health insurance plan for them. This is because there are too many choices that leads to confusion as to which plan will serve the health needs of them and their family. By learning some basics about health insurance, one can easily get a health insurance plan that is right for their needs.

Most of the health insurance plans are got by going through the employer. These days most companies provide health insurance to its employees through a group plan. As most of the employees will be covered through a group, the premium for health insurance comes down. Many of these plans are designed not only to cover the employee but also the family members of the employee. Although this increases the premium paid out, the plan covers the entire family thereby increasing the benefits of the plan. To go by this route through the employer, one needs to check with the department of human resources in the company and check the policy of the company towards health insurance. Every employee should be able to begin an individual health insurance plan through the group scheme at any point of time during the tenure with the company.

If you are in between jobs and were previously covered by your employer in the earlier job, the COBRA law entitles you health insurance coverage continued from the coverage you had on the earlier job. This law is passed by the government to protect your health interests and will provide you health insurance although the premium might be increased from what it was earlier. If the insurance coverage was extended to the entire family, the law will permit the continuance of the full coverage for a particular period.

However, there are many millions of people in America who are not covered through a group health plan provided by an employer. For such people, the insurance companies offer individual plans. The people under this are mostly those who are self-employed or people who are not provide with health insurance by the employer or those who do not qualify for aid from the government health insurance like Medicaid or Medicare. However, these individual plans are dearer in comparison to the premium paid in the group insurance plans. These plans can also cover other family members by paying extra premium. Getting an individual plan is quite easy as most of the insurance companies provide these plans. One can search through the internet also for more information on these plans. Some sites might help you get a comparison in terms of pricing and other details between various plans.

Another avenue that needs to be remembered is federal health aid. People above 65 years or those with some kind of disabilities as mentioned in the guidelines of the government can apply for Medicare. Income based insurance program provided by the government is Medicaid. One must remember that health insurance is very important and whatever avenue is chosen to achieve this is not important. The only thing is that to get the maximum benefit at the lowest costs one should properly research and find the best options one has towards getting health insurance.

Wikinews Shorts: April 19, 2007

A compilation of brief news reports for Thursday, April 19, 2007.

Wikinews reported previously on an Internet outage in New Zealand that lasted for over five hours. Telecom New Zealand, the company that owns and operates the “local loop”, said that they will review compensation for its customers on a case-by-case basis.

A wholesale ISP is attempting to give its subscribers compensation for the outage. CallPlus says that it is asking Telecom for the thousands of dollars it needs to pass on to its affected customers. They doubt Telecom will give them the money needed.

Irrigation water to a substantial proportion of Australia’s farming regions could be cut due to drought conditions, Australian PM John Howard has warned.

Mr Howard’s comments concerned the Murray-Darling Basin, one of the largest systems in Australia. “If it doesn’t rain in sufficient volume over the next six to eight weeks, there will be no water allocations for irrigation purposes in the basin”, adding that the drought conditions could continue until May 2008.

He continued “It is a grim situation, and there is no point in pretending to Australia otherwise,” he said. “We must all hope and pray there is rain.”

Russia, in coordination with the government of the United States and Canada, is planning to build a tunnel from Russia to Alaska, Viktor Razbegin, deputy head of industrial research at the Russian Economy Ministry, told reporters in Moscow Wednesday.

The tunnel is budgeted to cost US$65 billion and would take 10 to 15 years to build. The tunnel is to provide train and automobile transport between Alaska and the Russian Far East, and to carry petroleum and natural gas pipelines, and high-voltage electrical cable.

The proposed tunnel is 64 miles long, or about 100 kilometers, in total, and is designed to link with two islands in the Bering Strait. The project is expected to have a very positive economic effect in the area.

Derek Brower, an energy market expert, called the project “absurd” and suggested the Russian government is playing political games to threaten its European customers to sign energy deals.

“I’ve never heard of this plan,” said Sergei Grigoryev, Vice President of oil pipeline monopoly Transneft.

“To be honest, anyone who look[s] at the map will realize that the project is too hard to implement,” an anonymous government source told Reuters.
