Chili Finger Incident

Correction — October 10, 2019 The day of the alleged incident, March 22, 2005, was a Tuesday, not a Thursday.

Friday, May 6, 2005

On Thursday the 22nd of March, 2005, Anna Ayala, a woman from Las Vegas, claimed to have found a human finger in her bowl of chili at a Wendy’s restaurant located at 1405 Monterey Highway, just south of downtown San Jose, California, owned by Fresno-based Jern Management.. The finger, which probably belonged to a woman as it had a long and manicured fingernail, did not belong to any of the restaurant employees. The food supplies were seized by officials to be traced back to its manufacturers, while the restaurant was permitted to open again later with chili prepared from fresh ingredients.

Wikinews reporter David Vasquez drove his car up to the drive-thru menu and found that chili was still on the menu, at a price of US$1.19 for a small serving. He also witnessed workers unloading supplies from a semi-trailer truck in the restaurant’s parking lot, and carting them into the back door of the establishment.

Initially, county health officials said Ayala was fine and the finger had been cooked, which would have killed any bacteriae in the finger. However, on March 27, officials admitted they were not so sure anymore. Tests were done on the finger to determine this. Dr. Martin Fenstersheib, Santa Clara County’s health officer, said that even if the finger was still raw when Ayala bit into it, the risk was low that she would have become infected with anything. However, he advised that Ayala should undergo a series of precautionary follow-up tests.

Sales at Wendy’s went down because of the incident. Wendy’s International, Inc. (WEN) closed at US$39.43 on Thursday the 22nd, and as the stock exchange was closed for the Good Friday holiday, traders did not weigh in the stock until the next Monday.

By Tuesday the 5th of April, officials had still not succeeded in tracking down the owner of the finger. The fingerprint on the detached digit has been run through an FBI database as well as the local criminal database in Santa Clara County, but no matches were found. According to Rich Reneau, who was leading the investigation at the time, the fingerprint was marginal, and the likelihood of finding a match was slim.

Wendy’s stock did not go down significantly and was trading at US$39.37 that morning.

The next day, on Wednesday the 6th, Las Vegas police searched the home of Anna Ayala. About a dozen officers conducted the search at Ayala’s home at Maryland Parkway and Serene Street at about 4 p.m. local time (23:00 UTC), according to witnesses at the scene. Ayala and other residents were handcuffed and brought out of the house. Ayala said that her teenage daughter, Genesis Reyes, had torn shoulder ligaments as a result of the search. The Las Vegas Review-Journal ran a photo of Reyes wearing a sling in their Friday edition. In San Jose, police spokeswoman Gina Tepoorten confirmed to reporters that investigators had served the warrant in cooperation with Las Vegas police on Wednesday, but she refused to reveal specific details about the warrant. By that time, Wendy’s was offering a US$50,000 reward for information leading to the source of the finger.

Research by the Associated Press uncovered Ayala’s history of lawsuits. Ayala successfully won her suit for medical expenses against the national El Pollo Loco chicken-chain, a previous employer, after her daughter Genesis contracted salmonella poisoning, allegedly from eating at the restaurant. However, Ayala lost another suit against General Motors in 2000 claiming that a wheel fell off her car. She also started a sexual harassment suit against her former boss in 1998. A total of 13 lawsuits in California and Nevada had been filed. Ayala replied the focus should be on Wendy’s, and not her record of law suits. Nick Muyo, a spokesman for the San Jose Police department, said not to expect new information in the case for at least a week.

On Wednesday the 13th there was a potential new lead in the investigation. A spotted leopard had torn off part of a finger from an owner of exotic animals, Sandy Allman, in Pahrump, Nevada. The portion of Allman’s torn off finger was approximately the same size – 1 1/2-inches long. Pahrump is approximately 45 miles away from Las Vegas. Carol Asvestas, who owns an exotic animal sanctuary, told the San Jose Mercury News she witnessed the leopard tear off the finger. She reported the incident to a hotline run by Wendy’s offering the US$50,000 reward. Cindy Carroccio told the San Jose Mercury News that the finger was not reattached, and that the clinic “gave it back to her (Allman) in a little bag of ice.” On the same day the lead was announced, Ayala decided to drop her lawsuit against Wendy’s, due to emotional stress.

However, when Allman’s prints were sent to San Jose police, they didn’t match. Two days later, on Friday the 15th, Wendy’s doubled the reward to US$100,000. The company revealed that employees had passed polygraph tests. Wendy’s continues to claim that there is no evidence that the finger ever entered their supply chain, pointing to a lack of any accidents among the workers at their suppliers. Wendy’s tip line had received reports from across the United States, from “folks who either have lost a finger, or know somebody who lost a finger,” San Jose police Sgt. Nick Muyo told the Associated Press.

On Thursday the 21st of April, Anna Ayala was arrested at or near her home in Las Vegas on Thursday evening, in connection with the case, shortly after Wendy’s finished its own internal investigation. According to court documents, she has been charged with one count of attempted grand larceny related to the chili case, and one count of grand larceny in an unrelated real estate deal, and is being held without bail in Clark County, Nevada, pending extradition. A press conference by the San Jose Police and Wendy’s was held on Friday, April 22, at 13:00 PDT. The charge related to the case states the finger could not have been prepared at Wendy’s, where the chili is heated to 170 degrees for 3 hours. There is also an inconsistency in Ayala’s account of finding the finger and claiming it caused her to vomit compared with police saying there was no vomit at the scene. The incident has caused Wendy’s 2.5 million dollars worth of damages, which Ayala could be criminally responsible for. Until recently, the San Jose police had not accused Ayala of planting the finger herself.

The unrelated charge stems from an incident, also in San Jose, when Ayala allegedly received an $11,000 down payment on a mobile home she did not own.

Ayala was incarcerated at the Clark County Detention Center, awaiting a fugitive review hearing on Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at 7:30 a.m. local time. She was processed and given inmate ID 01964047. Her case number was 05F07229X. Ayala waived extradition at the hearing, and her attorney said they were ready to come to San Jose to defend against the charges.

On Friday, May 6, 2005, Ayala was transported to San Jose, California. Ayala was booked into the main Santa Clara County jail, and is awaiting arraignment. Ayala will likely be arraigned on Monday or Tuesday at the Santa Clara County Superior Court, according to Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney David Boyd.

On September 9, 2005, Ayala plead guilty to conspiring to file a false claim and attempted grand theft, and will be sentenced on November 2, 2005. She faces up to ten years in prison, and her husband faces up to 13 years behind bars.

Until the middle of May, the owner of the finger still had not been found.

But on May 13, 2005, police announced that they had identified the finger tip as belonging to an associate of Ayala’s husband [1]. The associate had lost his finger tip in an industrial accident at an asphalt company[2] in December, 2004. Police had received the information from an undisclosed caller to Wendy’s hot-line.

India’s Enforcement Directorate issues notice to Natwar Singh

Monday, September 4, 2006

India’s former External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh has, for the first time, been directly accused by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for his involvement in the Iraq oil scam. The ED, which is responsible for enforcing foreign exchange control laws, has alleged that Singh, along with his son Jagat Singh and three others, acquired foreign exchange worth $8.9 lakh illegally. The 18-page show-cause notice issued by the ED says the money was acquired by the accused, in violation of U.N regulations, in exchange for two oil contracts awarded to Iraq’s State Oil Marketing Organisation (SOMO).

Of the $8,90,000, $7,48,550 was allegedly transferred by them to an account in the Jordan National Bank, the remaining $1,46,247.23, which was the commission for the oil-contracts, was deposited with Barclays Bank, in the Channel Islands. The money was transferred to an account in the name of Indus Trading Company, which itself is owned by Andaleeb Sehgal, a friend of Mr. Singh.

The accused are required to respond to the show-cause notice (issued on the 2nd of September), which Natwar says is an attempt by the ED to “defame” him, within 30 days. The independent Pathak Commission’s report had stated that there was “no material evidence to show that Natwar Singh derived any financial or other personal benefits from the contracts.”

5 Steps To Giving Comprehensive Job Interview Examples

While there is no one-size-fits-all approach to job interviews, one strategy that benefits everyone is to give examples that are specific and complete. In interviews, you will often be asked for examples of your work:

 • Tell me about a typical project at Company X;
 • Tell me about a project where you managed people/ presented to senior management/ impacted the bottom line;
 • Tell me about an analytical/ research/ strategy project; or
 • Tell me about your favorite/ least favorite/ most difficult/ most rewarding project;

To be a prepared candidate, therefore, you need a list of projects that showcase different points you wish to make different skills, different scopes, different expertise. You also want to be able to describe your projects comprehensively enough so that the interviewer has a clear sense of what you can do and what you have accomplished.

Many candidates make the mistake of getting bogged down in the minutia of the project. They regale the interviewer with a lot of history and background research that usually doesnt give the interviewer a sense for their active role. Remember, you are not trying to make the interviewer an expert on the project. You are selling your skills and expertise, and therefore you need to make the interviewer understand the scope of the project and your role therein.

Be able to answer these five questions for any project you discuss in an interview and you will have a comprehensive answer:

Who sponsored the project: CEO, department head, line manager? This gives the interviewer a sense of the projects importance.

What was the objective? This is where you showcase your business sense. Give a clear and concise answer as to why this project was undertaken. It boils down to revenue generation or cost savings, so know this and frame your answer accordingly.

What was the deliverable: Powerpoint presentation, white paper, presentation to senior management, Excel model? Give the interviewer a tangible sense of the result of the project.

What actually happened? Let the interviewer know that you know your impact on your companys business. If the company benefited, quantify this. If the company didnt move forward, explain why not.

What did you do and what did everyone else on the team do? Be specific about your role so you dont come across as overreaching and so that the interviewer doesnt assume you did more or less than you did. At the same time, being clear about what everyone else did shows that you are a team player and are aware of what is going on around you and what other people contribute.

Craft your project descriptions so that the above five questions are answered seamlessly therein. Dont wait for the interviewer to prompt you. Most interviewers will not and will just rely on the incomplete information you volunteer and then will not credit you with a comprehensive answer.

Large Texas hospital dismisses 75 employees

Tuesday, March 20, 2012

A recent media report indicates that 75 Parkland Hospital employees in Dallas, Texas were dismissed over the past three months. These actions follow closely behind a lengthy spell of government regulatory sanctions and failed inspections at both the state and federal levels. The hospital’s interim CEO did confirm for media sources that numerous employees had been “encouraged to leave” during the past few months.

The hospital hired a new chief nursing officer in January and has been reorganizing nursing services throughout the facility. In September, the hospital and federal regulators in Dallas entered into an agreement which requires the hospital to reach compliance by April 2013.

After discussing some personal experiences there, a long-time resident of Dallas, who has sought treatment at the hospital told Wikinews, “Frankly, I don’t have anything positive to say about Parkland [hospital].” Our source did not want to give his name.

Senior Chinese official executed for spying for Taiwan

Thursday, August 10, 2006

A Chinese government official convicted of working for the Taiwanese government has been executed, and thousands of civil workers viewed the taped trial for “educational purposes” on Monday. The prisoner’s name was Tong Daning and was in his mid-50’s and held a rank just under “Assistant-Minister” before he was found guilty of espionage. According to the anonymous sources, Daning had been selling state sources for over 15 years, making a profit of about US$250,000.

Daning is the highest ranking person executed in China since 1999, when a Major General and Senior Colonel were executed for selling state secrets. China and Taiwan have been spying on each other ever since 1949, when the People’s Republic of China was officially created, but that has not stopped over 1 million Taiwanese citizens from working and investing over 100 billion USD in China. There have been many cases of espionage within the last few years, with all but two resulting in a death sentence.

What Every Potential Real Estate Investor Needs To Know

Submitted by: Keith Junor

What Every Potential Real Estate Investor Should Know

If you truly want to become a real estate investor there are some basic skills you need to have or be able to get

Unlike any other kind of investment in real estate investing, you are responsible for the work required to make a return on your investment. Even if you have other people doing some of the tasks you still must know how to do them in order to tell someone else what and how to do it.

Some of the most important skills you must know are as follows:

Where to find the right properties.

Without them, there’s no money to be gained. Properties are the lifeblood of real estate investing. In order to be successful in this business you need to be able to find and evaluate properties to determine if they are good solid investments.

I am of course talking about bargain properties that meet your predetermined set of rules

A low price alone doesn’t mean it’s a good real estate investment. For some investors, terms are more important than just a low price ie: no money down, seller financing etc.

What about the condition? What it will cost to upgrade if necessary? What about the neighborhood or the economy in the area?

You’ll need to find out a lot more about each potential deal before you can say with certainty whether it’s a good investment or not.

Negotiating The deal

Now that you have found the right property for your portfolio it is time to start the negotiation. In order for this to be a good investment you must be able to make a profit now or in the near future. Mistakes at this stage will cost you in the end so you must negotiate the best deal for you by keeping in mind all the expenses and what can go wrong, and planning for most eventualities.

Read some books, take some courses or get a coach. It will save you a lot of time and money in the long run to get it right the first time. Do not Learn from my mistakes as that can be very costly.

Once you learn core negotiating skills, you’ll have the ability to go into a deal and work out the terms to create a win/win situation for everyone but especially for yourself

If you’re saving yourself time by working with a real estate investment firm, then the deal will have already been negotiated for you. This is a great way for the novice investor to get started because it helps minimize risks while they learn the business.

The many Ways To Invest in Real Estate

The goal is to get a lot more money out than was put in. This is known as leverage. In real estate investing, there’s quite a few ways to do this such as:

1. rehabs or

2. fix up and resell,

3. short sales,

4. foreclosures,

5. new construction

6. rentals

Decide which of these strategies you prefer to use and then learn as much as you can about them prior to even looking at properties. The more you understand the strategy or technique, the easier and safer it will be to start investing and making money from real estate investing.

Contracts

For the most part you want to learn how to create contracts that protect you and can be assigned to another party to close. This is known as a reassignment and is another way to make quick cash by flipping the contract to another investor for a fee.

There is an huge amount of information about investing in real estate out there in books, tapes, coaching groups, on the internet etc. so find it asap as the sooner you learn these key skills, the sooner you can start making money in real estate investing.

Be prepared , take your time and learn from legitimate sources and you to can be the next Donald Trump.

Greece wins 2005 Eurovision song contest

Sunday, May 22, 2005

The Eurovision Song Contest 2005 was won yesterday by the entry from Greece, Helena Paparizou, singing My Number One, second place going to the entry from Malta and third place going to Romania.

The competition was held in Palace of Sports in downtown Kiev, Ukraine, after its entry, Ruslana, had won the 2004 contest singing Wild Dances. Semi-finals had been held on May 19, 2005. 10 out of 25 countries with the highest scores in the semi-finals then joined 14 already pre-qualified countries in the final. Both events were televised across Europe.

More than 6000 spectators attended the event. Organisers hope that it will boost Ukraine’s image abroad and increase tourism, while the country’s new government hopes that it will also give a modest boost to the long-term goal of acquiring European Union membership.

Bulgaria and Moldova took part for the first time while Hungary returned after a hiatus since 1998. Lebanon had been expected to make its debut appearance but decided to withdraw. For the first time in the history of the contest, Ireland failed to qualify.

The hosts for the event were Maria “Masha” Efrosinina and DJ Pasha, a TV Presenter and Radio DJ.

Finally, it’s important to note most countries now choose to sing in English rather than their native language, since rule changes permit the singer to perform in any language they want.It is interesting to note that Spain, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, who all automatically qualify for the final by right of paying the bulk of the budget of the European Broadcasting Union (Eurovision’s parent organisation) all finished in the bottom four positions.

These pieces of outdoor equipment, gear and health care goods are examples of the kinds of sports equipment that contribute to sports advancement and give you a performance advantage.

Carry Devices

Whether you hike, bike, mountaineer or ski, you need a way to transport your equipment from the road to your base camp. For most outdoor sports, that means toting it on your shoulders in a sturdy backpack. Hikers and trekkers put a great deal of effort into choosing backpacks that are lightweight, sturdy and easy to carry because they know they\’ll be carting 30 to 60 pounds of gear in those backpacks. Essentially, you\’ll need to carry everything you\’ll need for your trek on your back. Or will you?

A new carry device is designed especially to allow backpackers to take the weight of the world – or at least of all their gear – off their shoulders. The marvel of good sport design is a lightweight frame-and-ball that fits most well-known high-quality backpacks. With the ball in the upright position, the carry device barely adds any weight at all to the pack. When you tire of carrying your backpack on your shoulders, you simply flip the frame with the ball to the ground and pull your backpack along behind you or push it ahead of you. The oversize ball is designed to roll easily over rough terrain and enables you get to your destination with more energy and less stress.

The Carry-All

Need an easy to carry pack for your most basic necessities? Look for a stash station that holds your pen knife, cell phone, mouth freshener, sunblock or just about any other small-but-important items that will just get lost in the bottom of your backpack. Even better, find a carry-all that features an integrated LED torch to light your way in the dark.

Physical Therapy Pad

A body pillow is designed to help you get through your days with less pain and more comfort. A custom-designed therapy pad can be used for long drives, for camping or to apply ice therapy to sprains and other painful injuries. It\’s designed to fit itself to your body\’s unique shape and contours, making it easy for you to get comfortable, even on the cold, hard ground.

Ski Wax

The right ski wax can give your skis that extra glide and kick you need for high performance sports. With dozens of formulations on the market, you can find waxes designed for just about any type of ski and combination of conditions you can imagine.

Equipment that features advanced sport design gives you an advantage in performance, no matter what sport you favor. Make it a point to keep up with the latest sports advancement so you\’re always ahead of the game.

Wikinews interviews former Salt Lake City mayor and 2012 presidential candidate Rocky Anderson

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

Former Salt Lake City mayor and human rights activist Rocky Anderson took some time to discuss his 2012 U.S. presidential campaign and the newly-created Justice Party with Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn.

Anderson served as mayor of Salt Lake City for eight years (2000–2008) as a member of the Democratic Party. During his tenure, he enacted proposals to reduce the city’s carbon emissions, reformed its criminal justice system, and positioned it as a leading sanctuary for refugees. After leaving office, Anderson grew critical of the Democratic Party’s failure to push for impeachment against President George W. Bush, and for not reversing policies on torture, taxes, and defense spending. He left the party earlier this year and announced that he would form a Third party.

Anderson officially established the Justice Party last week during a press conference in Washington D.C.. He proclaimed “We the people are powerful enough to end the perverse government-to-the-highest-bidder system sustained by the two dominant parties…We are here today for the sake of justice — social justice, environmental justice and economic justice.” The party promotes campaign finance reform and is attempting to appeal to the Occupy Wall Street movement. It is currently working on ballot access efforts, and will hold a Founding Convention in February 2012 in Salt Lake City.

Among other issues, Anderson discussed climate change, health care, education, and civil liberties. He detailed his successes as mayor of Salt Lake City, stressed the importance of executive experience, and expressed his views on President Barack Obama and some of the Republican Party presidential candidates. He spoke in depth about former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, with whom he worked during the 2002 Winter Olympics, and fellow Utahan, former governor and U.S. ambassador to China Jon Huntsman, Jr..
