TGV makes 574.8 km/h on rails

Tuesday, April 3, 2007

A French Train à Grande Vitesse (High-Speed Train or TGV) has smashed the world record for a train on conventional rails by a big margin, reaching 574.8km/h (356mph) The TGV travelled over 59.8 km/h (36 mph) faster than its previous record of 515 km/h (320 mph)

The record attempt by a modified TGV took place on a track between Paris and the eastern city of Strasbourg. However, this is not the fastest train speed. A Japanese Maglev (Magnetive Levitation Train) reached a top speed of 581km/h (361mph) in 2003. The TGV made history at 13:14 CEST (11:14 UTC). The TGV had been modfied and was called V150 – a TGV with larger wheels than usual and two engines driving three double-decker cars. The vehicle’s horsepower was 25,000.

Reporters said the three train drivers were seen grinning on French TV after they realised they had broken the record. The TGV travelled almost as fast as a World War II Spitfire fighter at top speed. Even the electrical tension in the overhead cable was increased 6000 volts from 25,000 volts to 31,000 for the record attempt.

“We saw the countryside go by a little faster than we did during the tests,” engineer Eric Pieczac said.

“Everything went very well. There are about 10,000 engineers who would want to be in my place,” Mr Pieczac said. “It makes me very happy, a mixed feeling of pride and honour to be able to reach this speed.” Since their introduction in 1981, TGVs generally travel at about 300km/h (187.5 mph) however, on the recently opened Paris-Strasbourg LGV (Ligne à Grande Vitesse or High-Speed line) trains will travel at 320 km/h (200 mph)

SNCF and Alstom – the TGV’s manufacturer – have said that the record test was performed to see how a TGV would react in extreme conditions – conditions that cannot be performed in a laboratory.

After the record was broken, French President Jacques Chirac conveyed his congratulations on “this new proof of the excellence of the French rail industry.” The President also said that “Economically efficient and respectful of the environment, the TGV is a major asset in efforts to ensure sustainable development in transport

“What is important for us today is to prove that the TGV technology which was invented in France 30 years ago is a technology for the future,” said Guillaume Pepy

Alstom plans to increase TGV sales abroad, where it is competing with high-speed trains such as the Japanese Shinkansen and the German ICE. Currently, nations of the Far East such as China, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan are the “top” customers for high-speed trains. Agence France-Presse said that a high-speed rail link in between Los Angeles and San Francisco, California was being looked into.

Essential Tips For Choosing Outdoor Tiles

In fact, many people choose outdoor quarry tiles owing to their strength and durability.

• These tiles are naturally stained and slip-resistant naturally. Based on how you place and design the tiles, you can achieve a contemporary look with them. • The quarry tiles are fired at a high temperature which means that they can absorb more water than other types of tiles. • When installed with good grout, they make for one of the best options for outdoor spaces like porches and patios.• Since they are man-made, there is uniformity in appearance as compared to other tiles.• You can also create your pizza baking stone outdoors with quarry tiles. Isn’t that great?

There are few other things that you should keep in mind when getting tiles for outdoors. When someone enters your home, it is the outer space that creates the first impression. When you are busy creating perfect aesthetics for your interiors, don’t ignore the exteriors.

Let’s have a look at some tips for choosing outdoor tiles:

• Take a note of the surroundings

You should first consider the house’s surroundings and keep a check on the temperature fluctuations around the place. Choose an outdoor tile design that has material favourable for the local climate. Never choose tiles that remain cold during colder times and heat up during warm temperatures.

• Have clarityThere is a huge variety when it comes to outdoor tiles, and it can be confusing to choose the best one. You need to focus on how you wish to utilize the outdoor space. Once you get this clarity, it will make the choice of a pattern of the right outdoor tiles easier. While some people wish to keep it simple, others might be looking for something over the top and lavish.

• The coating on the tilesOutdoor tiles are vulnerable to accidents. Frost or wetness on the tiles can lead to severe injuries to you and your family members. Thus, you should also choose tiles that are frost and skid-resistant in nature. The finishing of the outdoor tiles should be a little rough as compared to indoor tiles that are smooth. This will help in preventing accidents. Try to stay away from polished tiles.

• Go creative with coloursOnce you have decided on the pattern and coating of the tiles, the next thing to decide is the colour. Colours play a crucial role as they can give a great look to your outdoors. You should be careful about the colours you choose. The outdoor tiles should neither look too simple that they don’t strike an impression at all nor should they be too gaudy.

• Personal touchYour home is an extension of your personality, and hence every element should have your personal touch. While the above-mentioned factors are important, don’t forget to give your personal touch as the outdoors are also a part of your dcor theme. You can also go for different tiles for different areas of the outdoor space based on the needs of a particular area.

Theoutdoor quarry tiles are one of the best options for your porches and patios. You can also explore other options for outdoor space and choose the best one suiting your needs.

Yahoo! snaps up Flickr

Monday, March 21, 2005

Portal and search company Yahoo! has purchased Ludicorp Research and Development Ltd., the private corporation which owns the photo sharing site Flickr. The news was officially disclosed in a Sunday posting to the corporation’s staff blog and is credited to Caterina Fake, Flickr’s vice president of marketing and community. The posting announced the sale, but did not disclose details of the deal. In a report by Silicon.Com, Yahoo! spokeswoman Joanna Stevens confirmed the deal on Sunday but also did not disclose the terms.

Both Fake and Stevens said Flickr will remain independent. Stevens added that Flickr’s employees will relocate to the Yahoo! headquarters in Sunnyvale, California later this year.

Rumors of the sale have been circulating amongst bloggers for some time, though neither company would confirm or deny the rumored sale. Other rumors had Google or AOL as Flickr’s probable suitor.

Flickr allows users to upload pictures from their computers, digital cameras, or camera phones to a personal website where they can display them, engage in photo blogging and create photo albums. The graphics may be licensed under a variety copyright license schemes including public domain, and photo owners can be easily contacted through the website.

Yahoo! had earlier announced Yahoo! 360°, a blogging service with sharing privileges and integration with other Yahoo! services such as internet broadcasting and instant messaging.

Doctor robbed, car-jacked and locked in boot while car set alight

Monday, March 19, 2007

A 34 year old obstetrician from Forestville on Sydney’s Northern Beaches has escaped after he was robbed, car-jacked and locked in the boot (trunk) of his BMW, which was set alight. Police say the doctor was locked in the boot while his car was set alight, but was allowed to escape before flames engulfed the vehicle.

The Doctor was believed to have been heading to The Mater Hospital in North Sydney when he was waiting at the intersection of West and Falcon Streets in Chatswood around 3:15AM AEDT when a small red sedan with two men claiming to be police officers signalled him to stop. After crossing the intersection, the doctor stopped his car at the side of the road.

The doctor was then approached by the two men and when he asked to see identification, one man grabbed the keys from his car’s ignition before they both pulled the doctor out of his vehicle, hit him in the stomach with a hammer and stole his mobile phone and wallet. The robbers also demanded his key and credit cards along with their access codes before locking him in the boot.

Police allege that the men drove to several locations to withdraw cash and buy things before driving to Carisbook Street in Linley Point at around 4 a.m. local time where they set the car alight with the doctor still in the boot.

Crime Manager of the Harbourside Local Area Command, Detective Inspector Houlahan said that the doctor then “heard a click in the boot area and he heard someone call out: ‘Get out of the car'”

“When he pushed the boot up he found his car engulfed in flames.”

Det. Insp. Houlahan said the doctor told police he did not unlock the boot himself, and it appeared the man’s captors unlocked it before fleeing.

Det Insp Houlahan said that the doctor appeared to be “very distraught” and tired after the ordeal, and wanted to get home and see his wife and two young daughters.

He could only provide police with a vague description of his captors, but said the men were both Caucasian males aged in their 20s, and that one of them was about six feet tall (183cm) with short blond hair and medium build said Det. Insp. Houlahan.

How To Get Help From Fha And Refinance A Home Loan With Bad Credit

How To Get Help From FHA And Refinance A Home Loan With Bad Credit

by

Emanuele Allenti

The US Federal Housing Administration offers loans that enable individuals to acquire a home with a down payment as low as 3% – a percentage comparatively lower than most limits for regular loans. Thus, the loan program under the FHA – a division of the Department of Housing and Urban Development – is ideal for first-timers and those with limited funding. It should be noted that the FHA insures your loan and does not offer home loans. In case of a default, an insurance fund will cover payment for the lending institution. To do a FHA refinance home loan with bad credit, this aspect can be a real challenge for most people.

An FHA loan applicant should be backed up by a positive credit history, a reasonable income level and adequate cash down payment to close the loan. To qualify under the program, a borrower should also settle closing costs worth about 2%-3% of the house price. This could also include fees for attorneys, title search and insurance, FHA insurance funding, and loan origination. The borrower’s monthly housing cost must not surpass 29% of his gross monthly income to qualify for the loan. Property taxes, mortgage principal and interest and insurance are computed to determine total housing cost. This total housing cost and long-term debt make up total monthly cost, which must not exceed 41% of gross monthly income. Credit card balances, auto loans and other borrowings are included under long-term debt. These percentages reflect greater leniency on the part of the FHA, as the ceiling for total housing cost under conventional loans is at 26%-28%, while the cap for total monthly cost is at 33%-36%. Can You Really Get A FHA Refinance Home Loan With Bad Credit? The agency has been allowing refinancing schemes on insured loans since the start of the 1980s. A “streamlined” FHA refinance covers the lender’s underwriting and documentation requirements, and does not imply the absence of costs. Key conditions of a refinance include FHA insurance of the target mortgage, updated payments, and a reduction in the payments made by the borrower due to the refinance. Borrowers must note that a FHA refinance home loan with bad credit also bars any cash take-out on the home loan. For lending institutions, one refinancing approach they can follow is the “no cost” plan, which does not entail out-of-pocket costs for the borrower but will involve higher loan interest rates compared to a cash settlement of closing costs. The premium from the higher charge will he used by the lender to cover the transaction’s closing costs. With a FHA home loan bad credit lender, this can be the factor to approve a loan. With a FHA refinance home loan bad credit option, the lender can also choose to integrate the closing costs with the new mortgage amount, assuming appraisal of a target equity level for the asset. The alternative to this scheme is to exclude appraisal, but this means the original mortgage amount will remain higher than the new mortgage. Insured mortgage programs under the FHA for single families include a plan covering disaster victims; the energy-efficient mortgage program; reverse or home equity conversion mortgage; title I home improvements; rehabilitation mortgage; and a program covering Indian reservations and similar restricted property. Is There FHA Refinance Home Loan Bad Credit Options For Disaster Victims? The Section 203(h) program for disaster victims enables the FHA to cover loans by applicants whose homes have been destroyed by natural disasters and are either rebuilding their home or chosen to acquire a new house. The reverse mortgage or HECM, which targets the country’s senior citizens, allows the cash conversion of part of the individual’s home equity. The federally-insured program is often sought by older Americans to augment social security, cover home improvements and finance medical emergencies. When you are considering a FHA refinance home loan bad credit lender, be sure to have an experienced accountant and attorney explain the details before you sign your refinance documents.

Bluetongue disease appears in UK for the first time

Saturday, September 22, 2007

The first ever case of Bluetongue disease has been reported in the UK. The case involves a cow at a farm near Ipswich, Suffolk.

Bluetongue affects ruminants such as sheep and cows, but is not known to affect humans. It is sometimes fatal, depending on the animals affected, and presently has no treatment. The disease was prevalent in Africa for many years and had since migrated to European nations such as France and Germany, causing officials had feared a UK outbreak in the UK follows recent outbreaks of the disease on the European continent in nations such as France and Germany.

Experts such as microbiology professor Hugh Pennington of Aberdeen University had suspected the disease would eventually spread to the UK.

US Senate unanimously passes genetic nondiscrimination bill

Thursday, April 24, 2008

In a unanimous 95-0 vote Thursday, the United States Senate passed a bill that would forbid employers and health insurance companies from discriminating against someone based on information learned through genetic testing.

The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act, described by Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy as “the first major new civil rights bill of the new century,” will now be sent back to the House of Representatives, where it could be approved as early as next week. President George W. Bush, who would have to sign the bill for it to become law, has voiced his support for the legislation.

The bill forbids employers from firing, refusing to hire, or otherwise discriminating against employees based on genetic information, such as a family history of a hereditary disease. It also makes it illegal for employers to request genetic information of an employee or the employee’s family.

Health insurance companies are also addressed in the bill, which forbids them from requesting genetic information or using such information to set premium rates or determine enrollment eligibility. However, insurance companies would still have the right to base one’s health coverage on the actual presence of a genetic disease.

Americans can now be confident that their genetic information cannot be used by health insurers or employers in harmful or hurtful ways.

“For the first time we act to prevent discrimination before it has taken firm hold and that’s why this legislation is unique and groundbreaking,” said Maine Senator Olympia Snowe, who sponsored the bill along with Sen. Kennedy and Sen. Mike Enzi. Snowe fears the threat of discrimination may discourage people from undergoing genetic testing, which can help to diagnose a wide range of diseases and lead to lifesaving therapy.

Kathy Hudson, director of the Genetics and Public Policy Center, reports that 92 percent are worried that information gained in genetic testing may be used against them. “After a very long wait,” she says, “Americans can now be confident that their genetic information cannot be used by health insurers or employers in harmful or hurtful ways.”

One part of the bill addresses this concern. “Federal legislation establishing a national and uniform basic standard is necessary to fully protect the public from discrimination and allay their concerns about the potential for discrimination,” the bill reads, “thereby allowing individuals to take advantage of genetic testing, technologies, research, and new therapies.”

Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn initially blocked Senate action on the bill, warning that it could potentially lead to excessive lawsuits against employers and insurers. But after changes were made to the bill to ease his concerns earlier this week, he supported the legislation and allowed the Senate to vote on it. “We certainly improved the bill from a liability standpoint,” said Coburn, an obstetrician.

Similar bills were unanimously passed by the Senate in 2003 and 2005, but in both years the bill stalled in the House. The current bill was passed in the House of Representatives a year ago by a 420-3 vote. A genetic nondiscrimination bill was first introduced 13 years ago by New York Representatives Louise Slaughter, who says the House will “get it out to the White House as quickly as we can.”

Foot-and-mouth confirmed at UK farm

Saturday, August 4, 2007

Cattle at a farm in Surrey, UK have tested positive for foot-and-mouth disease. After symptoms were reported late on 2 August, the farm was isolated. Following testing, officials from Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) confirmed the outbreak on 3 August.

A three kilometre exclusion zone and a ten kilometre surveillance zone have been put into place around the farm, near Wanborough. All livestock on the farm have been slaughtered and incinerated. Any movement of livestock in the UK has been banned and the EU has banned exports under emergency measures, expected to be confirmed on Monday. Farmers are urged to watch their animals carefully for symptoms, and report any to Defra officials.

The government’s emergency committee Cobra met to discuss the situation before the announcement, with Prime Minister Gordon Brown participating via telephone. Brown cut short his holiday in Dorset to return to London on Saturday, when another meeting of Cobra was held. Environment Secretary Hilary Benn also returned from holiday in Italy.

The last outbreak of foot-and-mouth in the UK was in 2001. It resulted in the slaughtering of up to 7 million animals, and losses estimated at £8 billion.

In France, the government has asked for all the animals imported during the last ten days to be tested. All meetings including animals have been forbidden on the French territory.
