US adds 173,000 jobs in August; unemployment rate drops to seven year low

Monday, September 7, 2015

The US economy added 173,000 jobs in August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday. The unemployment rate fell from 5.3 to 5.1 percent, the lowest since April 2008.

Although August job gains were lower than most economists forecast, job growth numbers for June and July were revised upwards by a combined 44,000. Average job gains over the past three months stand at 221,000, compared to March-May’s 189,000 monthly average. Over the past twelve months, job growth has averaged 247,000 per month.

Average hourly earnings rose 0.3 percent, or 8 cents, marking the largest increase in earnings in seven months. Hourly earnings had risen by 6 cents in July. Wages have risen by 2.2 percent over the past year.

Job growth in August was primarily concentrated in the health care and social assistance, financial activities, and professional and business services sectors. Those three areas of the economy added a combined 108,000 jobs. Food service and drinking places employment increased by 26,000 over the month, and other economic sectors saw employment hold steady. Manufacturing, on the other hand, saw employment decline by 17,000 in August. A stronger dollar and worldwide economic weakness make US exports less desirable, leading to a flattening in manufacturing employment so far this year after steadily rising in the early years of the US economic recovery.

The solid overall job gains led analysts to slightly raise expectations for a decision by the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates this month. Investors raised the likelihood of a September rate increase from 26 percent before the jobs report to 30 percent, and stocks dropped by over one percent on Friday. “The payrolls data is certainly good enough to allow for a Fed rate hike in September,” said Deutsche Bank’s head of currency strategy, Alan Ruskin. “The big question is still whether financial market volatility will scupper the plans.”

“This is the first time the market has looked at a Fed meeting and really has no idea what the Fed is going to do,” said Mark Kepner, a New Jersey equity trader with Themis Trading. “Right now you’re looking at the overall uncertainty and that’s what’s hanging on the market. I don’t think this number in and of itself changes how somebody’s going to vote.”

Bank of England governor warns housing market is biggest threat to UK economy

Sunday, May 18, 2014

The governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, has warned that the state of the housing market in the United Kingdom is the current biggest domestic threat to the country’s economy, due to lack of house building, and regulatory issues.

In an interview to be aired on Sky News today, he said the housing market is the “biggest risk” to the economy and has “deep, deep structural problems”. Of house building he said: “There are not sufficient houses built in the UK. To go back to Canada, there are half as many people in Canada as in the UK, twice as many houses are built every year in Canada as in the UK and we can’t influence that.”

“We’re not going to build a single house at the Bank of England. We can’t influence that. What we can influence […] is whether the banks are strong enough. Do they have enough capital against risk in the housing market?”

Carney also said the Bank of England would look into the procedures used to issue loans and mortgages to see if they were being granted appropriately: “We’d be concerned if there was a rapid increase in high loan-to-value mortgages across the banks. We’ve seen that creeping up and it’s something we’re watching closely.”

Kris Hopkins responded to Carney on behalf of the government, saying the government “inherited a broken housing market, but our efforts to fix it are working”. “We’ve scrapped the failed top-down planning system, built over 170,000 affordable homes and released more surplus brownfield sites for new housing. We’ve also helped homebuyers get on the housing ladder, because if people can buy homes builders will build them. Housebuilding is now at its highest level since 2007 and climbing. Last year councils gave permission for almost 200,000 new homes under the locally-led planning system and more than 1,000 communities have swiftly taken up neighbourhood planning. It’s clear evidence the government’s long-term economic plan is working.”

Earlier this month, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development called on the UK government to “tighten” access to the ‘Help to Buy’ scheme introduced by George Osborne and the coalition government in 2013. ‘Help to Buy’ has also recently been criticised by three former Chancellors of the Exchequer — the Conservatives Norman Lamont and Nigel Lawson, and former Labour Chancellor Alistair Darling. Darling said: “Unless supply can be increased substantially, we will exacerbate that situation with schemes like Help to Buy.”

Types Of Property Tax Explained

By P Green

Several famous people including Benjamin Franklin have said over the centuries that the only certain things in life are death and taxes!

While we can’t help with the former, we can with tax and especially helping you to understand property tax.

It’s an unfortunate fact of life that you could be charged money in the form of a tax when you move house, especially if you are a property developer trying to make a profit.

There are several different ways that you can be stung. And while this article can’t help you legally minimise your property tax bill (there are plenty of accountants who will do that), it can at least make you aware what you might end up paying.

Here are the main types of property tax explained and explored:

Stamp duty

This is the main way most people in the UK pay a tax on their home. It’s a tax that has been around for more than 300 years, and was introduced as a tax on written documents that needed a physical stamp to be attached. These days it exists primarily as a tax on the transfer of shares and securities, and in a different form, as a property tax.

You pay stamp duty land tax when you buy a house or other property, and the amount of tax paid depends on the purchase price. The current threshold for a domestic property is 125,000. If the purchase price is below this no tax charge for you. But if the house costs between 125,001 and 250,000, you’ll pay 1 per cent of the purchase price in tax.

And that percentage goes up, the higher the asking price of the house. If it’s between 250,001 and 500,000 it’s 3%. And for homes worth more than half a million pounds, it’s 4%.

There’s one other exception if you are buying a house in an area the government has declared a disadvantaged area. There you don’t pay any property tax if the purchase price is 150,000 or less.

Capital gains tax

This is a property tax that you pay when you sell your house but the good news is that most of us won’t pay it. CGT doesn’t apply in most cases when you are selling your main home, only if you are an investor and have extra properties that you wish to sell. Then you amount of tax you pay will depend on your income and how many other chargeable properties or other capital gains you have made. It can be as low as nothing and as high as 40% of the profits you have made! Most investors need an accountant to help them plan for this and keep their tax bill as low as possible.

Inheritance tax

Some people call this death tax, as you are only liable to pay it when you inherit something from someone who has died. If it’s under the threshold of 285,000 you won’t pay anything but anything above that is taxed at 40%. Thanks to the huge increase in house prices over the last few years, there are many “ordinary” people who have property worth that much, meaning many more people are being stung by this tax. Years ago only very rich people were hurt by it; current figures show 2.4 million people will now be affected when they die.

Again, a good accountant should be brought in as early as possible to help plan and minimize this tax. It’s relatively easy and perfectly legal to change your estate years before you die to prevent having to pay it.

China overtakes Germany as world’s biggest exporter

Sunday, January 10, 2010

Chinese officials have said that their country’s exports surged last December to edge out Germany as the world’s biggest exporter.

The official Xinhua news agency reported today that figures from the General Administration for Customs showed that exports jumped 17.7% in December from a year earlier. Over the whole of 2009 total Chinese exports reached US$1.2 trillion, above Germany’s forecast $1.17 trillion.

Huang Guohua, a statistics official with the customs administration, said the December exports rebound was an important turning point for China’s export sector. He commented that the jump was an indication that exporters have emerged from their downslide.

“We can say that China’s export enterprises have completely emerged from their all-time low in exports,” he said.

However, although China overtook Germany in exports, China’s total foreign trade — both exports and imports — fell 13.9% last year.

School dinner costs just 49p in Wales

Wednesday, March 30, 2005A survey carried out by BBC Wales has revealed that the contents of a school meal in Wales cost on average just £0.49 per pupil. Average spending on meal ingredients varied slightly from council to council; with the Cardiff City council spending just £0.40 on each meal, whilst Powys council lavished £0.69 per pupil.

The survey follows a recent surge in media coverage of the eating habits of teenagers and children in the UK. Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver recently embarked on a campaign to improve food standards and raise awareness in schools. In response to his campaign the government has promised to spend an additional £280 million over three years on school food in England.

The survey covered twenty councils throughout Wales.

The History Of Tie Dyed T Shirts

The History of Tie-Dyed T-Shirts

by

The Sider Group

When people think of tie-dye t-shirts, they think of Woodstock, hippies, Joe Cocker, John Sebastian, and all those cool cats. Today, tie-dye t-shirts are very popular and they are worn by people in different parts of the world. Have you ever wondered about the origins of these colorful shirts?

According to historical records, the technique of tie-dye was first used in China and Japan. During the T ang dynasty from 618 to 906 C.E., the Chinese were using tie-dye and the Japanese were also using this technique during the Nara period from 552 to 794 C.E. The dyes were derived from natural elements like roots, marigold, indigo, sage, lichen, onion, blackberries, berries, and flowers. The process of color extraction was quite simple. To extract the colors, the items would be placed in boiling water until the water became a dye. After that, the cloth would be dipped into the dye so that the color can seep into the cloth.

In Japan, the technique was further refined with the invention of tsujigahana, which was a new type of tie-dye. This happened around 1568 to 1603 during the Momoyama period. In this process, a type of Chinese ink known as sumi was used in combination with the tie-dye. Basically, sumi would be used to draw or sketch images on the cloth pieces. After the ink dried, the garments would then be dipped into the dye. At the end of the tie-dye process, the fabric would take on the color of the dye and the images would be made darker, giving them a special aesthetic quality. Today, garments made with this technique are regarded as prized possessions.

The technique of tie-dye was introduced to the United States during the Roaring 20s and the Great Depression in the 1920s and 1930s. The Roaring 20s was a great period, and people were generally happy to try new things. Through pamphlets, people learned about the various ways to design clothes and decorate their homes by using tie-dye. These lessons would be very useful during the Great Depression because people could use sugar sacks, coffee, and old cotton flour to make their own home decorations or clothes.

When the 1960s rolled along, tie-dye t-shirts became all the rage. With millions of hippies, suddenly, Americans were seeing tie-dye t-shirts everywhere. The hippie lifestyle was based on themes of self-expression, individuality, and community. Tie-dye t-shirts were the perfect representation of these ideals because they could make their very own unique t-shirts without spending a lot of money, and at the same time, they are united because the simple act of wearing a tie-dye t-shirt meant that they belonged to the hippie nation. As the hippies made their way to Woodstock in 1969, the world saw the glory of the tie-dye, culminating in a grand kaleidoscope of colors.

In the 1980s, tie-dye shirts were very popular because some designers were reviving the look. Modern tie-dye t-shirts are made from superior paints and dyes which are more long-lasting than the earlier ones. Today, tie-dye t-shirts are still popular though they cannot approach the popularity of yesteryears.

Actor Jerry Orbach dead at age 69

Friday, December 31, 2004

New York City — Actor Jerry Orbach died in his home in Manhattan at age 69. Orbach was a staple of American cinema, stage and television, with his most recent role being in the NBC police drama “Law and Order.”

Orbach is survived by his wife of 25 years, Elaine Cancilla, and his two sons Anthony and Christopher.

Orbach was born in the tough Bronx borough of New York City in 1935 to a family of entertainers. His father Leon Orbach was an vaudeville actor and his mother Emily Orbach was a radio singer and greeting card writer.

The family moved often to keep up with travelling Vaudeville acts, but eventually settled in Waukegan Illinois where Orbach played football at the local high school. After graduation, Orbach got a summer job at the Chevy Chase Country Club in Wheeling doing odd jobs ranging from stagecraft to small acting parts in plays.

He then studied drama at the University of Illinois before transferring to Northwestern where he studied the Stanislavsky Method of drama acting. In 1955, Orbach dropped out of college and moved to New York City where he got a job as an understudy in The Threepenny Opera.

Orbach continued to work in theater, eventually earning roles in broadway musicals, but by 1961 had grown dissatisfied with being typecast as a musical actor. He tried briefly to break into film without success, and eventually returned to broadway where he earned numerous accolades for his roles in such musicals as “Guys and Dolls” and “Chicago“.

Orbach finally broke into television in the 1980s as a recurring character in shows such as the mystery-drama “Murder She Wrote” and the hit sitcom “Golden Girls“.

He earned the lead role as the title character in his own short-lived series “The Law and Harry McGraw”, a spinoff of “Murder She Wrote”. Orbach also scored key roles in a few Hollywood films, including the action thriller “F/X”, and the dance-musical hit “Dirty Dancing”, but continued to find his mainstay in television crime dramas.

In 1990, he picked up a role in the new NBC crime drama “Law and Order” as the acerbic-witted Lennie Briscoe, a role which soon become a regular job. Orbach continued in this role in addition to movie roles and occasional musical appearances until his death this last week.

Orbach was diagnosed with Prostate cancer in Spring of 2004, a fact he kept private until November when he checked into New York’s Memorial Sloan-Ketting Cancer Center for treatment. In spite of the aggressive nature of the treatment, he died on the evening of December 28.

The Benefits Of Scrapping Your Vehicle

Of course, cars get old, they break and sometimes they get destroyed in accidents. When you buy a new car, you want it to last as long as possible as you have probably invested a lot of money in it.

If you have an old car and your car is no longer able to be on the road, or there are other problems with your older car that it quickly becomes inefficient to try to keep them running, and sooner or later, you find it taking up space as it sits unused in your driveway. Apart from these problems it probably becomes a drag on your life and your finances also.

In that case you should start thinking about getting it scrapped by a professional company. There are many benefits to doing this including the fact that you will get some extra money for doing so and on top of simply not having to repair the car anymore that it will have quite a big impact on the environment.

In this article, we are going to talk you through the benefits of doing this, so make sure to keep reading if you are interested inscrapping your car.

Here are the top benefits of scrapping the car-

 • Eco- Friendly

Simply sending the car to a regular dump wastes means you are indirectly helping the environment. When your car is scrapped, there are a lot of parts in the average car that can be reused and recycled. On the other hand, if you scrap the car, all of those reusable parts stay in use. That means there is less of a need for more metal to be created in the future. Also helps keep the environment healthier and dangerous chemicals out of the landfill.

Whenever new metal is made, greenhouse gases are emitted, contributing to global warming. Your scrapped car could be used to make something else, can be used in other cars, in other metal objects, and even in consumer electronics. Make sure to try out scrapping your car if you want to make your mark on the environment.

 • Extra Cash

If you are running low on cash, then it might be time to finally get rid of that old car that you can’t use anymore. Although you might have lost your initial investment that you put in the car, you will be essentially getting money for a piece of junk. When you scrap a car, most places will pay you upfront in cash. It’s one of the quickest turnarounds in money for property out there.

On top of this, You’ll get more money depending on the make and model so make sure to get a few different quotes before committing. so, you don’t have to worry about trading cars in. You don’t need to fuss with selling the car. Just scrap it, get your payment for the car, and move on.

 • More Space in Your Garage

How long have you been trying to get rid of that old used car that sits in your garage? It might be time to accept the fact that no one is going to buy it off you and you should try scrapping it. Yes, removing that hunk of junk from your driveway or your yard will free up a lot of room.

Once you do eventually get your car scrapped, you’ll find that space can be used for a new car, for other storage, or simply left available as open space. ofcourse, you will be happy with your decision. On top of this, you’ll have some money to go towards buying a new car.

 • Saves Energy

If you want to help to save the amount of energy that is used when manufacturing metal, you should think about scrapping your car. When the metal is made from recycled metal you could be seeing as much as 92 per cent of energy saved for aluminium. When copper is made, 90 percent of energy is saved and the figures stand at 56 per cent for steel. Make sure to consider this if you are thinking about scrapping your car and need that extra push to help the environment.

 • No More Maintenance Charges

The final benefit of scrapping your car is regarding the economic benefits that the recycling industry will see. This is because it is a lot easier and therefore cost-effective to recycle metal rather than mining ore. The reason being, you only need to melt and reshape metal rather than do the smelting and minor. When the recycling industry is able to save money on this, they are able to spend money on other things such as the wages of workers or even reducing taxes. The economic benefits might not affect you directly, but you definitely will see them.

Final Thoughts-Now that you know about the benefits of scrapping your car, you should consider this If you are thinking about scrapping your car, you should make the call as soon as possible.

Getting rid of an old car can be a simple process. If you want to get your vehicle off of your hands in Mumbai, you can scrap it with Aslam Salim Motorwala. Give us a call to get your junk vehicle removed on the spot for cash!
