Google launches Google Spreadsheets

Tuesday, June 6, 2006

Google has launched an online spreadsheet site, in a private beta.

The site will allow spreadsheets to be shared between up to 10 users, which is aimed to be useful to teams and small businesses. “Many people already organise information into spreadsheets. Where they are struggling is to share it” said the product manager, Jonathan Rochelle.

Google recently bought the online word-processor Writely, launched a calendar product, as well as a desktop search tool. Many see this as them straying into Microsoft‘s markets.

Google Spreadsheets uses very advanced AJAX (Asynchronous Javascript And Xml) and Client Side Scripting to mimic very effectively it’s desktop counterparts’ functions.

It is surprisingly fast, has very good formatting and advanced formula support, but best of all it has complete support for Microsoft Excel .xls files, and very good collaboration: just enter the e-mail address and you can share easily.

Why Register Your Horse?

Submitted by: Lydia K Kelly

There are so many horses out there; some with papers, some without. When you look them over, it is impossible to tell at a glance which ones are in fact papered, and which are not. Indeed, as many horse people love to say, it is not the papers that you ride, it is the horse. So why is it so important to register?

In an ideal world all horses would receive registration papers when they were foaled. Having papers allows horses to be traced and identified. It keeps them from being lost without any way of knowing who bought them, or where they have gone.

If all horses had papers, everyone would expect to receive papers when they buy a horse. If keeping papers up to date with current ownerships were mandatory, it would be possible to trace any horse to its current owner, and keep track of everywhere it has been. No longer would name changes and accidental losses of papers trouble breeders when tracking their youngstock. All horses would be traceable in a single database.

In the food industry any animals used for human consumption must be registered or marked so that they can be traced. For the same reason it has been proposed that horses be given life numbers that would mark them permanently, should they make their way into the meat market. While such a system makes sense for the meat industry, a universal registration system for horses could greatly benefit the horse industry itself.

Unfortunately at present registration does not work this way. While some horses become registered, many more do not. Even when horses are registered it is not uncommon for the papers to be lost, or remain behind with old owners who for one reason or another choose to retain them.

So, what makes the cost of registration worthwhile?

If you have ever gone shopping for a horse, you have probably noticed that you are more likely to look at a horse that has papers than one that does not. If you are selling a horse, having one with papers can often make the difference between a sale and being stuck with the horse for many more months.

Registered horses generally sell for more money than unregistered horses. They tend to be bought by more serious horse people, and have a better chance than grades of avoiding the meat truck. Even horse rescues are more inclined to rescue a registered horse than a similar grade one, knowing that the registered animal has a better chance of finding an adoptive home.

Of course, there are other advantages of registration. Many breed registries hold shows that are only open to horses registered with them. Others have incentive programs where you can earn rewards for successful performance records. If you are advertising your horse for sale, some registries have special classifieds sections just for animals registered with their group.

Having papers makes even a plain horse seem to be worth more. If your foal is able to be registered, it is worth spending the few dollars it takes to get his papers. Those papers might just save his life some day.

‘Denmark will be attacked’ says one expert, ‘Denmark safe’ says another

Friday, July 8, 2005

Security in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, was tightened after the attacks on London Thursday when 49 people were killed. Denmark supported the U.S.-led war on Iraq and fears of an attack are rising. “It’s not a question of if we’ll be attacked, but when” said security specialist Mikkel Vedby at the University in Copenhagen.

“This is how the world has become in the 21st century. There are people out there that want to harm us. They are at war with us and it seems we’re in war with them. We might be safe tomorrow or the next ten years.” said Mikkel Vedby. He later added that Denmark needed to get ready to face a major terrorist attack.

The group that has claimed responsibility for the attacks on London, the “Secret Organisation Group of Al-Qaeda of Jihad Organisation”, issued a statement yesterday where attacks on countries that supported the “crusades” against Iraq and Afghanistan are threatened. Denmark is on that list. The statement has not been verified.

Anja Dalgaard-Nielsen, a security expert from the Danish Institute for International Studies, disagrees and says Denmark is not in danger of being a terrorist target because radical Islamic groups there are too small to be able to organise an attack. “It is true we are in a similar position as the UK. The Danish government does work closely with the United States and the United Kingdom governments because of Iraq and Afghanistan.”

As in other countries, security in Denmark has been stepped up at airports, rail stations, ports, borders, and other public places.

Neville Chamberlain’s War Diaries go on display

Tuesday, August 18, 2009

File:Arthur-Neville-Chamberlain.jpg

The personal diaries of British wartime Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain are to go on display at the Imperial War Museum in London.

Beginning on August 20, 2009, a free exhibition, marking the 70th anniversary of the declaration of WWII, will allow visitors to have an unprecedented insight into the mind of the Prime Minister at the helm of the government when war was declared on September 3, 1939. His entry for that day, a note scribbled in pencil reads simply: “War declared.” With the diaries, a letter to his sister detailing the preparations for war, and the declaration letter itself, written by Foreign Secretary Lord Halifax.

The centrepiece at the exhibition will be accompanied by King George IV‘s jacket worn on his television appearance, and other previously unseen memorabilia from the period in the immediate run up to the Second World War.

A book, entitled The World Goes To War, is to be published on August 27, 2009 to accompany the exhibition. Also, a television documentary will be broadcast on UK network ITV1.

The network should be running smoothly and free from all troubles and should also be checked by an engineer from time to time. In fact do not wait for your network to break down before you get hold of an engineer. The engineer should check switches, check hubs, printers, UPSs, print routes and also update your firewall protection system. It doesn’t matter whether you are working on your laptop or have a large number of computers in your office to manage your business, the most important factor is that you should be working in close proximity with a reliable engineer or managed services Melbourne so that you don’t get into a problem every now and then. Bank of England governor warns housing market is biggest threat to UK economy

Sunday, May 18, 2014

The governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, has warned that the state of the housing market in the United Kingdom is the current biggest domestic threat to the country’s economy, due to lack of house building, and regulatory issues.

In an interview to be aired on Sky News today, he said the housing market is the “biggest risk” to the economy and has “deep, deep structural problems”. Of house building he said: “There are not sufficient houses built in the UK. To go back to Canada, there are half as many people in Canada as in the UK, twice as many houses are built every year in Canada as in the UK and we can’t influence that.”

“We’re not going to build a single house at the Bank of England. We can’t influence that. What we can influence […] is whether the banks are strong enough. Do they have enough capital against risk in the housing market?”

Carney also said the Bank of England would look into the procedures used to issue loans and mortgages to see if they were being granted appropriately: “We’d be concerned if there was a rapid increase in high loan-to-value mortgages across the banks. We’ve seen that creeping up and it’s something we’re watching closely.”

Kris Hopkins responded to Carney on behalf of the government, saying the government “inherited a broken housing market, but our efforts to fix it are working”. “We’ve scrapped the failed top-down planning system, built over 170,000 affordable homes and released more surplus brownfield sites for new housing. We’ve also helped homebuyers get on the housing ladder, because if people can buy homes builders will build them. Housebuilding is now at its highest level since 2007 and climbing. Last year councils gave permission for almost 200,000 new homes under the locally-led planning system and more than 1,000 communities have swiftly taken up neighbourhood planning. It’s clear evidence the government’s long-term economic plan is working.”

Earlier this month, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development called on the UK government to “tighten” access to the ‘Help to Buy’ scheme introduced by George Osborne and the coalition government in 2013. ‘Help to Buy’ has also recently been criticised by three former Chancellors of the Exchequer — the Conservatives Norman Lamont and Nigel Lawson, and former Labour Chancellor Alistair Darling. Darling said: “Unless supply can be increased substantially, we will exacerbate that situation with schemes like Help to Buy.”
